walkie-talkies

Why did the Johnathan and Isabel characters communicate by walkie-talkies instead of cell phones?

reply

I thought it was because he couldn't afford a cell phone or doesn't want one. Isabel had a cell phone which shes used through out the film but Johnathan never used one. He used the phone from his job once. I think the cell phone was a way for them to communicate and save money or maybe John just has something against cell phones.

I believe the implication was that they were never that far apart. The walkie talkies only have a radius of about three miles. So I think it was a furthur sign that they were "trapped".

also to give the sense of new york. that they were always close although at varying elevations...

also that is was a unique line of communication between them.

and it's cool!!!

it's interesting to note, though, that jonathan finally used a cellphone when he was leaving a message for alec (am i right? cause he said he was "at your door." he was bowing though so i couldn't see the cellphone. if i'm wrong, sorry!). this scene could tell us implications of jonathan's true feelings for alec, but we cannot conclude what they really were to each other because of the limited focus on their relationship in the film.

but hey i totally agree with that being a cinematic technique, strictly speaking. just a thought!

Correct, cell as you can see while freeze frame forward...and the loud snapping sound when he snapped clamshell cell.

Plot spoiler:

True feelings? Presume you mean just sex partners or somewhat in love.

Whatever the previous relationship, movies does end with Alec agreeing to start all over and their formal introduction, which would imply starting all over is the beginning of romantic courting.

reply

Yes, I assumed he kept his cell phone only for private conversations with Alec and pretended to everyone else not to have one.
