Did u guys see the last twist coming? (Spoiler warning)

I feel kinda slow for admitting this. Like there was a lot of cheating going on in the movie, but the twist about Johnny's homosexual affair with the unemployed actor...I feel like the movie hinted at it a lot, but when they met on the rooftop I was completely hit by surprise.

Did most people see this coming? Am I really slow for not seeing it coming? I'm usually quite good at guessing twists...

for example..."Nine Lives" I completely predicted how it would end right at the beginning of the last scene.

But yeah...overall I thought it was a very good movie. I bought a *beep* burnt pirated DVD version for $3 because I thought it'd be a mediocre indy film. I was quite surprised at how much I enjoyed it. It was refreshing to see a multi-storied film that didn't have to rely on incredibly ridiculous coincidences to connect characters.

Yes, saw the 'twist' coming quite early on in the film. Part of it had to do with the advance publicity blurb, i.e. there was a gay subplot somewhere in there; the clues were James Marsden's reaction to the researcher's efforts to contact him, and the unemployed actor's nervousness around Glenn Close..and as with the kind of film there was bound to be a tie up. I didn't think it was that hard to spot.

Overall... i didn't think it was such a hot movie. I rated it 5/10, which means OK on dvd but not worth spending money at the cinema for. There are many better examples of this kind of ensemble piece.

I didn't see it coming until he sees Isabel with the green coat that belongs to Alec. It was his eraction to that that made me think there was something there. And I'm usually good with spotting stuff like this too. My kid sister, who's wicked smart (and not really a kid, but oh well) watched it with me and she didn't see it coming at all. So don't fell alone. ;)

The coat tipped me off. I figured there was more to it bc they showed him leaving the apt. And just being neighbors would be lame.

I saw it coming as well. When Alec walks the dog and just misses seeing her in the building, for a second I thought maybe he was supposed to be with her. BUT then when they showed the photos of her boyfriend who has supposedly been with the mysterious Benjamin...I knew. Still I think they did a great job putting it together.

There were alot of neat little tricks the director/actors played throught the movie to throw you off from the ending. one of my favorites was Alec's responce to Glenn Close's character being the director of the show he was auditioning for. At first it seemed like Alec had a previous relationship with Glenn's character...then when they met at the audition, Alec's reactions seemed to indicate that he had a relationship or attraction to Isabel.

I thought the movie was very well done. ^_^

Absolutely agreed! I went through the same train of thought until I realized what was really going on...

i saw it coming too. just like the other posters, the reaction of marsden's charatcer to the whole contacting through the phone messages gave it away for me. but that didn't make me loose interest, since i really wanted to know how it would all turn out.

I must say I LOVE the split screen use...it was only used 3 times...but the final split screen was a put to great use as a reveal for the twist.

one question....does Isabelle end up with IAN???

reply

I loved the split screen use too! :)

And I think it's supposed to remain open for interpratation, although it's quite likely that they will maintain some sort of a relationship...

I was tricked too. It was a very careful and subtle way to throw you off. When you find out you think: of course! but why I didn't noticed before? it was so obvious!

reply

I'll tell you what set me off, even though it may not have been intentional.

When Jonathan returned the coat I thought it was weird because I didn't remember Isabelle telling him what apartment Alec lived in. I didn't realize that they were having an affair, but I felt that something was weird. I began watching the characters closer after that and everything finally came together, of course, when Elisabeth ran into Alec on the roof.

reply

I saw it coming because of the way he was avoiding the potographers stuff, and the inuendos about his subjects. But the way they did the split screen was amazing and still made it seem fresh.

elizabeth told jon what aparment Alec lived in.

I saw a clip of the two actors coming so I knew there was a relationshp. I didn't under way it had to be concealed from the viewer. I would have enjoyed more exploration of that relationship. It was a more interesting triangle than anything else in the film.

reply

lol i didnt see it coming at all. i thought he was a porn star or something lol

reply

The biggest hint (in retrospect) was the scene where she wore Alec's jacket. Remember how steamed up Jonathan got?

Wow, you figured out the ending of "Nine Lives" right at the beginning? The scene with Glenn Close and Dakota Fanning in the cemetery? That one didn't dawn on me until afterward, and I felt very dense!

As for the twist here, I didn't really see it coming, but I wasn't surprised at all by it. There's also a foreshadowing when the unemployed actor, Jesse Bradford, asks whether his character is gay when he's trying out. They tell him: Yes ... and no.

I paid $1 for this film in the clearance bin, and I liked the performances but it was a bit too soapish for my tastes. I think "Nine Lives" was much better -- nine times better, actually.

reply

At the beginning, it was obvious that Jesse had a secret and that it had something to do with Diana or Isabel, but I forgot about it halfway through. So
I was surprised, but realized I should have known all along.

Oh yeah... I saw this twist coming big time. (Don't ask how I know:( The suppression of his homosexuality, him trying to suppress his fiance's success. The secrecy and suppression of his past. So so sad. The parallel story with her mother and her cheating husband. Good movie. Great performances.
