I am pretty sure I found a clothing mistake in this movie

In one scene where they make love on the blanket Wendy is shown wearing thong underwear. I don't recall seeing any of the girls I dated wearing a thong back in 1976. As a matter of fact I don't think thongs have been around for more than 5 or 10 years. I could be wrong on this but can someone help me on this, does anyone know if thongs were invented before the year 2000?

reply

No she wasn't she was wearing bikini underwear. And yes there were thongs before 2000 b/c I wore them from the 8th grade on up till now and I graduated in 2000 from High School. Hope this helps

I apologize in advance if anyone thinks I am making too much of an issue of this topic.

OK I will acknowledge the fact that they weren’t thongs but I still don't think they had bikini underwear back in 1976. If you graduated H.S in 2000 you had not been born in 76. I am pretty sure that they had woman's underwear that was really skimpy back then but I am fairly sure they didn’t have anything in 1976 that was linked together with a string on each side. I don’t know that much about the subject but I tried to recall what my girlfriend wore and I don’t remember anything that looked like that. Maybe they did have them and my girlfriend didn’t wear them???

Thongs were definitely around during the mid to late 70s, Just look inside any old sports magazine and you'll see women with them on. :)

O.K. guy you are right I wasn't even born in 1976. But I didn't say that I was nor did I claim to be an expert on bikini underpants. All I did was tell you that yes thongs were around before the year 2000. Yes you are right that you don't know much about the subject of women's underwear and I, as a woman ,was helping you out answering your question about thongs.

reply

oooooooook...

anyway, i'm certain they had them then. like mr.jitters said.

I apologize to anyone that thought I was being confrontational. I was just trying to get things straight in my own head. I guess the consensus of opinion here is the bikini underwear was around in 1976. I did see a lot of bikini style bathing suits around back then, I just don’t recall seeing any bikini underwear back then. I guess I’ll just have to admit to having a bad memory. I guess I got over excited because after all this time as a member and a lurker on his site I thought I found my first mistake.

I graduated in 1976 and my underware was small, like hers, not thongs though.

reply

So.... tell us more about your thongs...

That's right, we all wore big baggy flannel knee length bloomers. {rolls eyes}

Yes, we had bikini underwear wayyyyyyyyy back in 1976. I realize that seems like the stone age to some people. We had telephones and daily mail delivery, too.

thongs were not around in the usa around the mid 70's,bikini panties did exist though and were considered sexy.

Her bikini underwear was "up her butt" creating the thong effect. Come on! She said her Mom counts her underwear, she wouldn't buy her a thong.

All you need to know about things(or g-strings)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/G-string

quoting from wikipedia "Although it was worn for decades by exotic dancers, the thong first gained mainstream popularity in South America, particularly in Brazil in the 1970s"

"By the late 1980s, the design had made its way into most of the Western world, and G-string underwear became more and more popular through the 1990s"

So it could be possible to wear a thong back then but it was highly unlikely.

Gee, I couldn't sleep all night wondering if that was a THONG>

Okay... hopefully not too late for the original poster to read my response. My family lived in Houston, Texas during my teenage years in 1972-1977. Since Dallas is where clothing "market" originates, Houston followed the newest fashion trends.

UNDERWEAR FASHION OF 1970s:
THONG: This was a shoe in the 1970s. Flat shoes or Sandals that had a strap between the big toe and 2nd toe; now known as Flip-flops.

G-STRING: Underpants designed most like the thong of today. Worn in 1970s by strippers, theatre performers, and dancers in modern dance and ballet.

BIKINI: Women started wearing these in the 1960s and wore bikini bathing suits for swimming by the mid-1960s. Day-of-the-week bikini panties were invented in the 1970's. There were six pair in a set, a different color for each day, with the day's name printed in script on lower left or right of the panty.

Remember the movie, "When Harry Met Sally"? Sally is telling Harry why her last boyfriend broke up with her and claims it happened because of her "day-of-the-week" bikini panties. Her boyfriend became suspicious when she couldn't produce a "Sunday" pair of panties. When Harry asks why wasn't there a pair for Sunday Sally responds, "Because of God".

So yes, we had bikini underwear in the 1970's. Women also wore halter tops, tube tops, and went bra-less. It was an period of sexual awakening and invention. :D

The actress in this movie is wearing white bikini underpants. When she stands up to get dressed after getting frisky in the woods, check out the grass stain on the back of her white panties. And yes, the panty looks like a thong when she first stands up - hence the problem with panties that "RIDE UP". Not much different wearing a thong - some call thongs "butt floss". LMAO!

It's interesting that you should bring up the When Harry met Sally reference. I broke up with my girlfriend for much the same reason. Except, when I was finally able to get her pants off she had the same bikini underwear that you mentioned. On them was printed the day "Monday" unfortunately it was Friday...

Actually I doubt that she would have been wearing bikini underwear. Back then most women wore what the kids nowadays refer to as "granny panties". They needed extra reinforcement to hold in their massively unshaven parts as hardly anyone waxed back then.

reply

AHHHH ... speak for other women back then; my sisters and friends all wore BIKINIS!!! Not ever the "granny panties"... LOL
