Russel Crowe's performance

Wow, RC never ceases to amaze me. He played what could have been a cardboard cutout bad-guy, but gave it layers of depth that make him almost an anti-hero. I like that about his acting in this movie, although I'm not sure if it is owed to the source material, directing, or if he brought most of it to the table. I never saw the original. Does anyone know if he contributed a lot of the characters qualities, the subtle depth and such?

Crowe was great, I've just always wondered what would have been if the roles would have been reversed. I feel Crowe could have played the straight rancher great and Bale could have gone nuts with the colorful villain as he does so well in colorful roles.

actually, before i started watching the movie, i knew the basic idea and the lead characters. i assumed crowe would be the rancher and bale the outlaw. i could imagine crowe from his performance in gladiator, and bale having done such an amazing job in _american psycho_. to me, it initally seemed like an interesting twist that they were case in those roles.

yeah, i would love to see how different it might have been. :)

it's buried under a big W!
