Why the hell did Ben Wade let himself get caught?

WHY???? There are so many flaws in this movie which have already been mentioned, but why does he just stay in this bar for ages, waiting to get caught by the sheriffs?

He seems to like the game. He mentions later on in the movie that he escaped from Yuma twice already.
That and he has some morals about him.

Why not get caught?

He's escaped from Yuma prison twice before.

Wade strikes me as the type of person who likes to see OTHER PEOPLE deal with unexpected issues. He is ENTERTAINED being caught, toted around, seeing them plan and carry out their mission, and taking the chance to kill one of them every once in awhile. It's all a game to him -- it ceases being a game when he realizes Evans isn't going to back down.

Same reason he was pleading with that girl to run away with him, he was bored with his life. He didn't seem to have any intention of meeting back up with his gang at that point.

I understand the game playing reason, but Xevious I think is on to the more compelling explanation. Unlike Charlie, Ben had an awareness of morality. Not that he was a fully realized moral person, but neither was he a confirmed sociopath. He saw no future in continuing to rob the railroad. I also think he was concerned about the deaths in his gang that occurred, and from his perspective having to kill Tommy.

The way the sequence played out, he made his offer to the barmaid, and I think as far as it went it was sincere. By that I mean if she had said yes, he would have left with her. When she said no, he didn't seem to know what to do next. He had no plan.

And, as others have also pointed out, he had little reason to really fear going to Yuma prison.

One of my friends noted this as a flaw in the movie, but I don't see it that way.

When the time came for him to be escorted to the train station headed to Yuma, he had grown fond of Dan and what he had put himself through in order to save his family from starving and his younger son from TB. So he kinda helped Dan escort him to the train station...He wanted to see the pride in Dan's eyes when he put him on that train.

Ben Wade did some bad things and wanted everyone to think that he was bad, because he was a legend at that point. But it was Dan that showed him how a real man tries to take care of his business when *beep* doesn't go his way (drought, sick son, busted leg, etc.) and this made an impression on Ben who was a genuinely decent guy at heart. He wanted Dan to get him on that train so Dan could feel a sense of pride that he hadn't felt in a long time.

When Ben's gang ended up getting to Dan, this pissed Ben off so he killed them all. He never intended to go to trial or be hung or anything because he would've found his way off the train and onto his horse. But it was Dan that ultimately made Ben admit, at least to himself, that he was a decent guy at heart and wasn't "rotten as hell" as he had stated before.

Dub,

Good post. I agree.

reply

Agree with you. He did that to help Dan.

That and the fact since he decided to side with his captor, why not just tell his posse to back off...rather than both of them continue being shot at by them.?

reply

They would have probably turned on him (or simply considerered it a forced trick by the captors).

In a way maybe it was a vacation for him so he could get away from the game of life he lived and take a break from the crew that he ran. 3 squares and a bed for as long as he wants until his batteries are recharged.

I admit nothing!

Because he respected Evans, he respected how he was ready to give his life for that cause. Wade, genuinely liked Evans and didn't want his fight to go to waste; also Wade was already escaped from the prison 2 times before, he knew he would be able to escape again so it wasn't a big deal for him.
