Lou is responsible for Damien's accident. If he had listened to the doctor and not gone in, he wouldn't have gotten trapped under the coffins and Damien would not have been standing there. He put everyone in danger going in there.

I loved his character through the first 6 seasons but by the end he didn't even own up to his responsibility. Kind of turned me off to him

On the flip side of that thought.

His selflessness saved a company of veteran firefighters when he laid down his life for them. The very spirit of brotherhood that led them to cheat the exam for him to keep his job was why he didn't hesitate to lay down what could have been a few more years of his own life for them.
