There is an episode in season one where Tommy is remembering that morning in the lobby of the towers with his crew and then his cousin and other members go up the stairs and then the building goes down.

Just flashbacks. Tommy/Lou/Chief and i believe Franco were at the towers on 9/11. The first episode takes place around 2003/2004..a few years after 9/11.

Garrity was there too I'm pretty sure.

The episode in question is Season 1, Episode 8 "Inches". Tommy is stopped at an intersection and thinks back to when he and the guys arrived at the World Trade Center. Tommy, Lou, Franco, Garrity, Chief Reilly, Neils Jorgensen, Billy Warren, and Jimmy Keefe, Bobby Vincent, Ricky Davis, and Vito Costello, the four guys who were killed. The fact that they had 11 guys from the same company at the same time was not uncommon as the attacks occurred during shift change and many real-life FDNY companies were riding with two shifts of guys on board. It is a quick scene of the guys in the lobby of Tower 1. A Chief told Chief Reilly that he needed half of his guys on the 77th floor, and the other half on the 66th floor. Tommy stops to pick up the contents of woman's purse and gets a phone call from one of the lobby phones from Jimmy saying that they're trapped. Jimmy then screams as rumbling is heard. It is unclear as to whether or not it actually happened that way or just in Tommy's mind.

One of the minisodes has them sitting around the table joking, talking about baseball players using steroids. Tommy's brother is there.. just another day, but funny.. Then they get a call.. Camera zooms in on the date and it's September 11, 2001

There's also an ep later where footage is found where it shows his cousin was still alive after the first tower fell. A journalist is writing a story/book about it and interviews Tommy and others to get their take on it.
