Shows that have maintained quality through all seasons...

OK, I definitely agree that seasons 1-3 of Rescue Me were the best. But I was thinking back on other shows that I've enjoyed that have come and gone, and a lot of the shows I've watched have also suffered quality loss after the first few seasons.

Can anybody think of any shows that have generally maintained the same quality, or even got better, as the seasons went on? I'm just curious, I'm not necessarily looking for shows to watch.

Also, realizing good vs bad seasons is always relative. Whenever you end a show, there will always be comparison between the seasons. If Rescue Me had ended after season 3, then we would have said that season 1 was the best, and 3 would have been crap comparatively. Now that there's been 7 seasons, it's easy to see which were the best. But what if there had only been 3? Would we say that seasons 1-3 were great, which theoretically would be the entire running of the show? Probably not.

To end a show at its height seems like a really hard thing to do. Between the network, the money, and the people involved, who wants to end a show when it's doing really well. Talk about annoying the viewers. It's a catch 22. End a show at its height, and the viewers are mad. Continue making a show despite a drop in quality, and the viewers are mad. It's a lose/lose situation...except for the money, which is why shows usually continue beyond their "natural" lifespan.

The only show I can say maintained quality or got better as seasons went on was The Shield. As fondly as everyone remembers the Six Feet Under series finale, the final season as a whole and the fourth season seem to be generally regarded as not as good as the seasons before it. The final 2-part season of The Sopranos was probably the weakest point of the series. The Wire's final season didn't quite have the quality of the 4 seasons before it. You're right most shows aren't as good at the end as they are in the beginning, but on Rescue Me it was much more blatant than the others I've just mentioned.

The Sopranos was pretty good up until the end. One of the worst episodes was the finale ironically.

Trailer Park Boys I think has maintained its level of quality, if anything it has improved since the first season.

You make an excellent point. It seems that TV shows are like movie sequels. The show/movie does great and instead of just letting things go out on a high note they keep going and going (kind of like making ludicrous sequels)to the point where they alienate the fans.

Speaking only for myself. I don't want re-invention. I tune in each week because I want to see the same thing. Thats what got me hooked in the first place.

I can only think of 2 shows that, IMO, were still good if not better as they went on. The first one would have to be M*A*S*H. It didn't matter what season you were watching it always worked. They had a formula and they stuck to it and avoided the urge to re-invent themselves.

The second one would be HBO's OZ. It was tough to watch at times but again, they had a formula that worked and they stuck to it.

It seems to me that most shows loose what made them great. For example: Tommy's ghosts. Everyone I have ever talked to loved that about Rescue Me. As the seasons went on that aspect disappeared and with it some of the magic of the show.

House has gone the same way. The show used to be about the diagnosis and not the soap opera drama. They took away the graphics of the inside of the patients, House watching his soaps and House's demons. As they took away each element they slowly took away what made the show one of the best hours on TV. Now the show has been reduced to a shadow of its former self.

Good points, especially on MASH. I never watched Oz so I can't comment on that. My least favorite part of the show is Tommy's ghosts. I love the show but that is one part I can do without, especially when they last a long time like the one where they all appear in the bar. Enough already! Get back to the guys in the firehouse talking about chasing tail and non PC jokes. Love that stuff!

I thought BSG did well up until the last couple episodes, Alias as well. Buffy was one I thought got better for the most part. Stargate did well for as long as it was on, though the last couple seasons were only so so.. I'm liking SOA so far, though most people were down on season 3.

reply

Buffy season 2 and 3 were masterpieces. You thought it got better after that?

Rome and Deadwood were both excellent the whole way through. Though they were only 2 and 3 seasons respectively.

The Shield is absolutely the #1 spot for consistently good and getting better. Dexter I would say has been consistently good throughout it's run. Though it's on the brink of becoming stale if they don't make some drastic change, or just end the series by season 7 or MAYBE 8. Sopranos I found to be consistent throughout. Though there was maybe 4 or 5 episodes in season 6 that were horrid.

I've also enjoyed Entourage through the entire run, though I do understand why some people haven't liked the last couple seasons. Personally I still find them to be good.

South Park has only gotten better, Mystery Science Theater 3000 was always hilarious just for the type of show it is. Same with It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia.

While Sons of Anarchy is still airing, I've found each season to be excellent in its own way. The first two were very similar. Lots of people have had complaints about the 3rd season, but it's a season you have to be patient with and the payoff at the end makes the entire season appreciate better and looks like season 4 is going to be crazy.

End of line.

True Blood - has remained consistently good...no season really better or worse. They are in Season 5 I believe.

Totally different show, but Friends got better and better because of the character development, and it was always funny

Curb Your Enthusiasm

Supernatural - arguable for some, because many don't love the God/Devil/Angel storyline, but I dig it

Entourage - many disagree, but I love all seasons equally. All have great writing and performances

30 Rock

Dexter

Oh yes, True blood! Forgot about it lol
They're in season 4 btw. I found some of the stories dragged out a bit this season, but over-all still very good.

End of line.

Anyone who has read the True Blood series will have to disagree with you. Season's 1 and 2 were spot on with the books (except for Lafayette,) but after that they started to change the storyline. Still entertaining, but kind of insulting to the series.

The Wire
Twilight Zone
The Shield
Six Feet
Battlestar 06'
S.O.A - so far.
Breaking Bad - so far.
Sopranos - even with a few week episodes, no ENTIRE season was bad
Rome
Dead Wood
Angel

If we are talking drama shows, I can only think of the following in order:

1. The Shield
2. Deadwood (2 season)
3. Carnivale (2 seasons)
4. Justified (2 seasons-so far)

If you add in sitcoms, you can add MASH, Cheers and Seinfeld. Married with Children almost made the list if not for the Seven debacle.

If you add in animated shows, I guess you would have to put in The Simpsons and South Park.

I'm sorry I don't speak computer-ebonics, please type in English.

Only I can think of right now is Dexter.

Seinfeld? also.

But there is many series that starts to suck after 3 seasons.

reply

It's laughable that anyone can mention Dexter as a show that maintained quality throughout all of its seasons.

reply

I'm happy to see BreakingDexter finally mentioned Dexter and I'm shocked people think it's maintained quality as well.

Seasons 5 and 6 have been way downhill compared to the first 4 seasons. I didn't think anyone out there disagreed, but it's been mentioned a few times in this thread.

I hope season 7 saves it, but as of now, Dexter is not quality at all compared to its roots.

reply

Most of those posts about Dexter were written before season six though, when it lost some quality, but it came back in full force in season seven and had it's highest critical rating other than season 2 and by far the most viewers througout it's run, so it is nice to have come back so strong.

reply

The Sopranos. Not every episode was great but the quality remained high throughout the whole show.

And while the finale was left open ended it certainly had a lot of action in it.
