For a dark comedy, this show had some serious emotional moments

Rescue Me is a perfect example of how a show can be many things. For the most part, it was a dark comedy, but there were some real tear-jerker moments that struck deep in your soul.

What stood out for me is the last conversation Chief Reilly and his wife (who has Alzheimer's) have before she goes to the nursing home. It was one of the saddest things I've ever heard, in TV or real life. The two have had a rocky relationship, but she heads off into the unknown by telling Reilly she loves him in spite of everything that happened between them. The episode ends with her being brought to the nursing home and Reilly's wife, afflicted with Alzheimer's, running out and screaming for him to come back, before a caretaker corrals her back inside. It was absolutely heart-breaking to witness.

The other scene is when Tommy is sitting beside a fellow firefighter who's either in a coma or brain-dead. Tommy tells him to end his suffering and that he and his fellow firefighters would look after his family. Shortly after, the firefighter codes and passes away. Tommy says nothing and just walks out of the room.

I'm getting choked up just thinking about these scenes. Yet these are things many people go through on a daily basis. It makes you grateful for what you have and you realize nobody goes through life without undergoing adversity.

That was the entire basis of the series and reoccuring theme. Most dark comedies have the deep emotional and profound moments.

That being said, this series was amazing. Before I watched it, I honestly didn't know if I could handle Denis Leary, but he's actually a decent actor.
