Rhyming Very Distracting

I think this was an excellent film, done with flair and imagination. However, the rhyming did me in. I was an English major a long time ago and did iambic pentameter drills to death. I listened to the speech rhythms of the characters and found myself waiting for the rhyming word, rather than concentrating on what they were saying. So the inventiveness of Sally Potter ultimately damaged this film, at least for me. It was like listening to Shakespeare's sonnets. The language and philosphical discourses were vivid, but it was a damnably frustrating and distracting experience.

I agree. it is distracting. Takes me out of the story, makes it seem less real.

I thought it would b more distracting than it was. I didn't listen for the ohyme I just heard it fall into place and beause the speech patterns were so well done and not a slave to the rhyming it did n9ot disturb me but added a richness and a shape to the lines that was easier to take than Shakespeare
becuase the words were modern usage and not English usage of 4 centuries ago.But
well done shakes peare does veruy well too. this was just an amazing surprise.
sally inclucded a lot of her own talents in music and I am sure her knowledge
of dancing carried through those parts of the film. The soliloquos of the
different characters wre informative and emotional and made this a gem of a film. I haver never seen soliloquoys done as well. The Aunt in particular lived
in her deathbed talk to us ij such a glorious way that we knew the woman totally. Quite a feat.

In some scenes it sounded like a children's book to me. Not the content of the lines, rather, the style.

Children's books often rhyme.

brilliant! I loved it, did not find the IP distracting at all, actors made it seem effortless and natural!

I'm having a similar experience. The actors are doing a beautiful job in making the dialogue flow, no issue there. They make it sound natural and unforced. Yet I'm finding the iambic pentameter distracting because I too am anticipating the rhyme instead of actually listening to what they are saying. It's beginning to make me want to scream, it's getting to be like fingernails on a chalk board. I came here while watching the movie to see what others have said about it and I'm relieved to find I'm not alone.

I'll have to turn it off, I fear, even though the end is near. Perchance I will just watch it through, although my couch I'll start to chew...

When I think up a decent sig...I'll let you know.
