I don't understand the dislike

and think it's based on people's disappointed expectations. Moodysson took a difficult subject matter and, whilst it didn't work entirely, it's certainly better than a 4.5 IMDb rating.

The son and the girl are sympathetic characters who come across as real in this tawdry tale of 3 adults making porn. The mundane, seedy and desperateness of the characters really comes through. I got impatient watching it but certain moments have really stayed in my mind, e.g when Tess gets scared with the men and their intentions and stays away.

I thought the son, the withdrawn and grieving adolescent was well conceived.

A taut thread ties her to me from which hangs the question 'can I trust you?'

Filled with unsettling unsexual unarousing pornographia. but certain moments have really stayed in my mind - precisely, for many people those negative images will rise up when they rise up, thus affecting their rising up, if you know what I mean.

I do know what you mean .

You make a good point. I hadn't thought that the reasons some might not like it were because they don't want to think about how pornography is made and how tawdry it is because of what it suggests about them as users.

Moodysson's Lilya 4-Ever also handles a difficult issue and is more popular. Perhaps it's easy for the audience to be drawn into a sympathetic victim's plight in a way (sex trafficking) that most are oblivious and removed from. But in A Hole in My Heart none of the characters are particularly sympathetic (though I did feel for the son's lot) and it's an issue that many are implicated in.

Pornos are made by studios, not in someone's crappy apartment with disgusting performers

Hi Poppy.

I thought it was nuts but pretty absorbing and I didn't dislike it, put it that way, which is odd as I can usually take or leave these kinda films.

Hi Corpus

The characters were pretty nuts as well as absorbing!!

Did you watch it online or did you catch the actual dvd? I rented it ages ago and the extras are hilarious. Moodyson apparently lied his ass off to the actors about what the film was actually about and told the teen that it was a horror flick about vampires. This is all revealed via a blazing row between Moodyson and the cast.
I haven't seen his Lilya 4ever yet, but I hear it's really touching and a great film, so I really need to check it out at some point.
Hope all's well with you and yours btw.

I've got the dvd and never watched the extra (presumably this is in the 'making of ...' doc). How funny, I'll have to watch it soon! Why the hell did he do that?!? The teen would have made a cool vampire.

Lilya 4ever is harrowing and, whilst it's better than A Hole in My Heart, I'd sooner rewatch the latter rather than Lilya. I've seen F/cking Amal/Show Me Love and Mammoth as well. They're both good; Mammoth is very slick.

Thnaks for your kind wishes. I return the same to you. Nice to meet you on a non-horror film board ... or were you suckered by Moodysson as well?

There's quite a few revelations in the doc actually which kinda hammers home how erratic Moodyson probably is.

Heh, nah, I actually saw this ages ago, and rented it after reading some interesting reviews. I simply popped over here as both the horror and pol boards were kinda quiet, so I sometimes tend to visit random film boards and this film happened to pop into my head.

I probably haven't watched Lilya yet as I heard it's way depressing and I kinda have to be in the right frame of mind for such films, but I'll defo check it out at some point.
