Before Sunset or Before Sunrise?

Which one did you like better, and why?

reply

Before Sunset is definitely the better movie, from what I've seen. It actually held my interest more.

But I think I like Before Sunrise more because I love the ending. It was just so sweet. Possibly devoid of realism, but still very very sweet and it made me smile.

Actually, scratch that. I'm not sure which I like more. It's actually kind of hard to compare the two.

I was kind of dissapointed bij Before Sunrise. I read about the films ages ago, and always looked for them. Last week I bought them both, and watched the first. Altough some scenes were really good, overal I was a bit dissapointed.

This evening I watched Before Sunset, and I have to say, it totally made up for it! It was sweet, realistic and beautifully shot with some great choices in art direction.

The thing that made them both great for me was the ending of the 2nd film. I thought it was a brilliant desiscion, and I watched the entire credits with a big smile on my face!

Ps. Sorry for my bad English, it's not my first language.

Before Sunrise was better; I really felt myself to be more emotionally involved.

After Before Sunrise, I needed two glasses of coffee and a chocolate to get me out of the emotional slump it put me in.
After Before Sunset, I needed a quick pee to relax me from the excitement the ending conveyed.

So, Before Sunrise for me. Although both were <3

Why did that ending put you in an emotional slump? Before SUnrise's ending was hopeful and sweet, imo...

Everything leading up to it was sad, and besides, them meeting wasn't going to happen. You could feel it ;;

I think its like Jesse says in the beginning of the movie. It depends on your point of view.

If you're a cynic, you would think they're not gonna meet. I, on the other hand, as a romantic, felt that they were definitely gonna meet and I thought it was a very positive upbeat ending.

The first time I watched them, I liked Before Sunrise better. I just got done rewatching both again and this time I'd say I enjoyed Before Sunset better. Who knows, maybe I'll keep changing opinions every time I watch them.

Before Sunset because the characters are more mature. Before Sunrise just had me rolling my eyes at some of the corny love stuff they were talking about. Before Sunrise was like a teenage girls fantasy novel. Before Sunset is more of a reality.

reply

Yes, you are absolutely correct. I saw the first one when it was first out so had to wait nine years for the sequel, and had obviously matured along with the characters. The first one reminds us of twenty something love, freedom, no ties, optimism and the second one is more grown up, responsibility, Jesse has a child now, so he has changed. Celine is more cynical when she was the more optimistic one in the first film. I love them both for different reasons.

Perfect answer, I totally agree.

At first I loved them both and couldn't decide between them, but after seeing them again I have no doubt that Before Sunset is the superior movie simply because there is so much more at stake here and they are 9 years older and therefore have become both smarter and more disillusioned wich makes them much more interesting. Just look at the fantastic drama in the car scene where they end up revealing far more about themselves to each other than they could have imagined just minutes before (I guess) where they were just being cozy and having fun, but they have that special bond.... Nothing in the first movie can equal that scene.

And it's also extraordinary job by the actors in these long demanding scenes.

When the movie faded out I badly wanted more but also knew that it was smart to end it on such a high note without things getting to corny and mushy.

I sure hope I get to see them again at 40, but it's going to be hard to pull it off.

Before Sunrise is better

Before Sunset is better, but Before Sunset needs Before Sunrise. Some of the best, subtle moments of Before Sunset take place because Before Sunrise existed. To consider one better than the other can depend on the viewer, their personal experience, their age... for me "Before Sunset" has everything you can ask for... it is the perfect second part, a movie that will remain in my memory forever.

I thought Before Sunrise was boring at parts because it felt too unrealistic for me. Sure, that kind of meeting someone on the train scenario can happen, but hey, what are the odds? Also, there were some parts that I just rolled my eyes because it didn't seem to make sense to me, like who would do that? Nonetheless, I really liked the ending. Nevermind, I loved the ending. It felt bittersweet and I had a feeling that they weren't going to meet up again, which made it a better ending for me.

Due to the ending, I wanted to see what happened in Before Sunset. And I was right. They did not meet after 6 months. In fact, they met 9 years after. I thought Before Sunset felt more natural and real. They way they exchanged conversations seemed so real. I felt like they had more chemistry even though they did not kiss or have sex. The fact that they relate to the first movie made it even better. I felt like there were so much connections between these two characters. It felt like I was watching or stalking a couple in a cafe or on my vacation. As creepy as that sounds, I didn't even realize the movie was over until the credits rolled up. It was that quick. I'm glad how they left the ending ambiguous to the audience. It parallels with what Jessie said at the beginning of the movie.

So all in all, I'd definitely say Before Sunset is much better than Before Sunrise. However, Before Sunset needed Before Sunrise to be that great. Made it feel even more real.
