Don't you think a long term relationship (what the audience wanted to see) is not about "charm?" After several years together, the dynamic between people changes. These movies strive for moments of authenticity above all else. I think charm is too easy and the Before series always went for more than that.
Yes, Celine was a little "too" aggravating at times, but I admire the leap they took. They're going for reality, not fantasy. People always want fantasy because it's an escape from their own reality. Linklater's films have never been about "fantasy." His films are the opposite: life's moments. And mostly, life and relationships are not so charming or convenient.
