The Best Thing About Slipstream

The best thing about watching Slipstream was trying to figure out where it was filmed.

Supposedly the movie was set in California judging from the several license plates I saw throughout. But as soon as Vinnie Jones' character makes a comment about "damn yankees can't drive" I began to question the actual location. What city were they really in?

The Freeway crash scene was a big turning point with regards to the bus driver seated on the right. However there still were no tell tale signs of where it was filmed. They did a very good job of hiding name locations and street signs. Australia and New Zealand came to mind but I was not convinced it was filmed in either of those places. The beach/pool scene, the lush green mountainous terrain, The mostly 1950s/60s looking surrounding buildings, unfamiliar street markings and the fake american accents by the small part actors alluded to a foreign filming location.

Who knew South Africa could pass for Los Angeles?

It could pass for Los Angeles when we have no shot from any part of the city. This city never seemed like an american city.

So, if you want to know, they shot the film in Cape Town.

Here is the pool:

In Google Earth, you can find the hostage bus scene stage here: 33°55'06 south 18°26'00 east

You can visit the Cape Town airport site too.

The fact that they managed to shoot the bus scene on a wide-lane highway near multiple overpasses would have been impossible for a film of that low-caliber to afford for L.A., so that was tip-off number one.

Number two, the SWAT vehicles were less than imposing for any major city that has such an outfit.

And three, as the OP said, the bus driver's sitting position was the biggest tip-off of all. They should have shot it with the film reversed, but having the logo all over the bus was what held that back.

The Best Thing About Slipstream....is that it won't have a sequel.
