Pretty Persuasion vs. Election?

Alot of people have compared these to films, I didn't really see why. I can see that Tracy Flick and Kimberly Joyce are similar people, but the films aren't really, yes they have a few similarities but I don't really see why they are compared, anyone agree?

Heather Duke: Veronica, you look like hell.
Veronica Sawyer: Yeah? I just got back.

But I love Election

Pretty Persuasion was awesome, but Election has to be one of the funniest movies I've ever seen.

In a way, I'm really nerdy and dedicated like Tracy (though maybe not as extreme) and when I overreact, my mom always says "Calm down, Tracy!"

lol

"Au revoir, les enfants."

They're both great movies. I just got done watching Pretty Persuasion on television and I thought it was excellent, however I can't really pick which one I like better.

They have their similarities (deadpan humor, mostly), but Pretty Persuasion is much darker and more vulgar. I guess if I had to, I'd go with Pretty Persuasion. But Election is right in second.

Election any day of the week.

I think the two are compared so much, not because of Tracy/Kim, but because of the type of humor. It's dark and a little mean-spirited; it encourages you to laugh at people because either you can relate or you dislike their type; plus, morality becomes relative pretty easily. You find yourself rooting for any number of characters who don't seem worthy on paper.
Also, though, both have student/teacher interactions in which the person who has the upper hand is the supposed victim, which we don't see a lot in the movies.

Right on. If anything, the tone and seduction in Pretty Persuasion is more similar to that in Cruel Intentions.

I loathe Cruel Intentions. Ten years later, I'm still aghast that they remade a brilliant John Malkovich classic with Ryan Phillipe. Tone-wise, there are definitely similarities, but I'd say the writing and acting make them come off very differently.

reply

Remade a brilliant John Malkovich film...

Jesus, you do realize that Dangerous Liaisons is really, really old, right?
They did that movie in the freaking 50s in France, and I think it was originally a play.
They didn't "remake" a John Malkovich film, they did an updated version of a classic play...
And it was *beep* awesome.

The original novel dates way back to 1782; one of the first psychological novels. And it's brilliant. I personally am not ashamed to say that I love both the Stephen Frears version (1988) and "Cruel Intentions" for its campy, nostalgic value (1999!). I wasn't a fan of Milos Forman's "Valmont" (1989), and I thought "Untold Scandal" (2003) was decent. I haven't seen the other versions, but I think the most recent is Chinese and from 2012.

As for the original poster, ELECTION is a 100 times better than Pretty Persuasion, no contest.

I enjoyed PP(Great performances by Wood and Woods), but Election was far superior... Better pacing, directing, and the dialog was WAAAAY better. The script for PP left something to be desired... It definitely need punching up. Also, the exposition at the end was terrible in Pretty Persuasion... They also show the pretty but no persuasion... Like how does she seduce that lesbian reporter? I WANTED TO SEE THAT! haha

Election far better and far more developed. But James Woods was great as always.

"Election", by a country mile.

"Pretty Persuasion" kinda reminded me of an inferior high-school version of To Die For.

Election is the superior film, but I do like both.

I'll tell you the greatest regret of my life: I let my love go.

I don't think Kimberley and Tracy are that much alike, really. Whereas Kimberley knows she's mean and doesn't care, Tracy is very self righteous and highly ambitious. I think Kimberley is more intelligent than Tracy but Tracy is a hard worker. I guess one thing they both have in common is that they must have their own way at any cost and consider others beneath them. I don't think they would like each other if they ever met. Kimberley manpipulates people to get what she wants; Tracy manipulates the system. Kimberley would consider Tracy a freak for her strong work ethic and sneer at her. I actually prefer Tracy to Kimberley, though. Kimberley is just too creepy. I guess I would have to pick "Election" over "Pretty Persuasion" even though the latter has its merits.
"Cruel Intentions" on the other hand, was a load of crap. It was like a bad soap opera. It has more in common with "Gossip Girl" than either of the abovementioned movies, which are both good.

cruel intentions was awesome.
in fact i'd like to see kimberly joyce go up against kathryn mertueil
rather then kimberly vs. tracy.

reply

I agree. Tracey can be interpreted as a pretty sympathetic character and she isn't purposefully manipulative most of the time. I always empathize with her when I watch Election.
Kimberly was more villainous. Pretty Persuasion isn't as multifaceted as Election and doesn't really get the viewer into Kimberlys mind as well as Election does for Tracey. Pretty Persuasion doesn't rate as highly as Election, Jawbreaker or Heathers for me because Kimberley isn't as interesting a lead as Tracey, Courtney or Veronica.

Is this turnout weak or what? I had at least 70 more people at my funeral.

reply

If we're comparing... if you ever watch Skins (UK version), you'll see that Tony Stonem is like the male equivalent to Kimberly Joyce... they even sort of look alike

Pretty Persauion, definitely. Only on rewatch I realised just how great the script is and how inteligent the jokes are. Both films had strong Leading Actress performances, but I would still give the edge to Pretty Persuasion.
