How did she get the bruise on her leg?

This movie was great. Hope to see a lot more of Abbie Cornish and Sam Worthington.
Can anyone tell me how Heidi got the bruise on her leg?

reply

Although it is far from clear I made the assumption that it was either a lovebite or as a result of a night of mildly rough sex.

lol seems like you'd know a lot about that :p

reply

Yeah, the Nuns gave very descriptive lectures.

I made the assumption they never had sex at all. At first I figured Joe was a virgin and the heated argument with his mate about "not geting any" made me think, it was true for his mate and him. And the "I'm F*&%ing the girl in the BP station" was male bravado! The "homosexual confusion" supports my theory.

We only ever saw her have sex with the other men/boys, never with Joe.

Not sure where the bruise on her leg came from though.

reply

Possibly. Possibly not. It's possible that the homosexual confusion comes out of unsatisfying sexual experiences rather than no sex at all. The notion of the bruise--in particular Hiedi's interest in it--suggests evidence of her connection to Joe (given that most of the connections she makes are physical). It seems like he left a mark on her that she can use to evince their coupling.

She got that bruise from sex with him the night before. It represents him leaving her emotionally bruised.

reply

like all your points,
my mate and i were discussing this the other week.
watch the part when Joe say "I like to touch them i supose", what where he touches her...it's possible that this is something he does in the heat of the moment e.g. during sex or intimacy.

i want to say i dismiss the point made earlier that Joe was a virgin. no way!!! Joe is just as confused about himself as heidi, he's look for the same acceptance as her. notice how cold his parents are to him and Richard is the only one he is warm with...that to me is what sparks the brief but strong kiss between them. Joe does not know how to find what he wants, Heidi resorts to short lived sexual encounter that amount to nothing.

reply

Agree... I think the mark was a way of showing how that it wasn't an emotional relationship with gentle intimate sex but just sex for the sake of sex. Therefore being more rough and none emotional.

anyone seen the track listing to the soundtrack? track four titled: Rough Sex

the bruise was a reminder to her of joe and the fact that, for a period of time, she was not alone. she slept with the first guy because she needed a place for the night, she was prepared to sleep with the store owner because she needed a job, she would have slept with the man staring at her from the car for money and whatever he could do for her, and she would have slept with joe the first time in order to once again have a bed for the night. she slept with joe in the end, even though she no longer "needed" to after he had paid for the hotel for the night, because she craved the physical/emotional connection. she was feeling alone and rejected by her mother and she substitued sex for affection and companionship. she traded her body for what it could afford her, but what she really wanted was to be loved. she naively thought she had found this with joe, and to her the bruise was a token of his love. a reminder of his touch. a prize to be treasured. she was not alone, and that was the proof.

He's not a virgin, no way. He's way too experienced. The scene when they have breakfast in the flat shows he knows exactly what to do. And for me this doesn't fit with the "rough sex" idea BTW. He's trying to please her. That's not the way an unexperienced "rough" guy would act.

I agree with you that he can't get close to someone emotionally and tries to do so with sex, just like her. We see it again when he kisses Richard.

If the idea is to stay alive, I'm driving.

From Joe's hip-bone.

From Joe's hip-bone.

Agreed. In fact, it's pretty common and it doesn't mean rough sex.
