well Louis was cute, but the character he ws playing... the last scene just really really gross.

i love louis, but i really thought he was dreadful in this film. on top of being disgusting it was incredibly boring.

reply

Isabelle and Louis were both fantastic, neither can be dreadful... it's against the law.

I thought it was sexy!

it's one interesting film. better than any other with julia roberts or bruce willis. but it's not for everyone!!!

reply

I certainly agree with this, certainly not for everyone, and deffinatly not easy viewing. Though I am glad that I watched it. It shows the versatility of Huppert in particular, however we all knew this already. Don't know if i'l be able to watch it again straight away though. Need to recover first. But no doubt will eventually!

You're so right. And apart from being disgusting, it seemed to have no point (or to have a great deal of trouble making its point clear). Not to mention the performances were so deadpan and the story so slow-moving that despite all the shocking elements (most of which seemed random and unexplained), it was still easily the most boring movie I've ever seen.

I bought a copy because I'm a fan of Louis, but I'm putting it on ebay since I surely will never watch that garbage again.

reply

I can't agree that this is a boring film but it certainly had trouble in expressing its point clearly. There were moments that totally disgusted me but there were also some interesting dramatic scenes and I wouldn't say the acting was terrible. The film suffered more from execution than from the disturbing nature of the topics explored, which to me is more on the director or the script writer.

The way I see it, is that we weren't retreating, we were just attacking in a new direction.

I am thinking about renting this movie b/c i love louis garrel but i don't want anything that is just pointless; wat are some of the disgusting parts so that i can decide whether or not i still want to rent it...thnx

reply

Well, disgusting is in the eye of each viewer. Kind of shocking? Yes. The most disturbing is the ending, so if you are wanting to avoid "disgusting", then do not watch the end. But how can you do that?

reply

I agree, la cinematheque. I just don't get it. What is the point?

i don't know what your problem is, but this certainly was not "boring". are just not used to slow-paced films? i watched this at 3am in the morning and thought it was great.

Watched this at 3 a.m. and thought it was great?
Are you sure it wasn't a wet dream?

reply

No offense, but it's funny that someone called toilet diving was so disgusted by this. :)

reply

well i mean, toilet diving is in reference to Trainspotting, which isn't as gross as ma mere.

reply

:) I got it... but feel it's equally gross. Regardless, they're both interesting films... although I prefer Trainspotting.

PS I agree with your comment on LG's performance in Dans Paris! He was fantastic- It's nice to see him doing some comedy for once, even if the movie itself is a drama.

I'm European but films like this remind me why I don't like European cinema. I don't mind the themes and the sex, it's just not enjoyable because it's filled with despicable characters.

reply

For me, it was just crap from start to finish, the direction, the editing, the camerawork. I didn't mind the storyline it was just so poorly executed. No continuity at all.

Nothing wrong with the acting from the two leads, but that was the only positive I came out with. Even the dreadful Baise-Moi was better than this sorry mess.

And what was with all the wanking?

reply

This film was explicit where it didn't need to be and obtuse when it mattered. It spent a long period working towards Louis's induction into his mother's sexually amorphous society and scant time on Louis's relationship with Hansi. I'm all for the director respecting an audience and their imagination, but not for problematic gaps that the director passes off as leaving it to the audience's decision.
