Not only did they dub his voice, but they used one of the worst, most obviously-dubbed voices EVER. Ya know guys, if you hire a fabulous French actor, and he's supposed to be a French engineer, it kinds defeats the purpose if you make him sound like a guy from Ohio. He has such a beautiful voice, too. What a crime! Une tragedie! I say: FREE LE BIHAN! Release the un-dubbed version! Let the man speak! ;-)
shareYou nailed it exactly! It was Ohio. You could tell by the way he said tomorrow. More like Toemore-oh. We were shocked by the poor dubbing. Kung Fu flicks have done a far better job. And what was the point? He was French after all. What a terrible movie.
shareGreat post! LOL! You know what the REALLY crazy thing is? The dubbing was done by LYPS, Inc, a company based in London. The voice probably belongs to a Brit who studied how to speak like Joe Average-American, and THIS was the incredibly bad result! I'd LOVE to find out why they did it, tho...was his accent too thick? Was it the rampant-anti-anything-French-feeling that was around at the time this movie was shot? It just doesn't make any sense. And--I wonder how much better a movie it would have been had his voice been authentic. It just shifted the feeling of the whole film & made it seem like a bad Lifetime Channel flick. shareEllen, speaking of Lifetime ... Lifetime is airing this tragedy beginning August 10th. IMHO, Le Bihan does not have an unintelligible American accent. I find Penelope Cruz' to be much thicker and less understandable personally.
I felt like the guy doing Le Bihan's dubbing was the guy that speaks after you hear, "OK, Johnny, tell him what he's won!" BLEAH!!!
Exactly! There is almost no emotion in his voice. It makes it unbearable and ruins the scenes he is in. It reminds me of when they dubbed over Andie McDowell's voice with Glen Close's in Greystoke the Legend of Tarzan. It wasn't as noticeable as this, but completely unnecessary.

Andy Mcdowell's flat, drab nasal South Carolina twang was unsuitable
for Greystoke. At the time she was a model, not yet trained as an actress.
She has had unbelievable good luck to be in memorable films like 4 Weddings
and Groundhog Day. She's still pretty rotten as an actress. As for dubbing...
I live in France where many films in various languages are ruined by dubbing.
I watch Chinese or Korean or Spanish films in the original versions with
French subtitles. Luckily in Nice we do get many Enlish language films
undubbed. Whew!

Well, he's actually a wonderful actor with a very charming and understandable accent when speaking English. Of course, I'm sure he's more comfortable when speaking his native language, but I'll never understand why they hired him KNOWING he was French,to play a French engineer and then dub over his voice...Hollywood! Go figure!! :-)
