Question for Brits - was Gordon Brown's Scottish accent that thick?

Watching this movie, Gordon Brown sounded very Scottish - we're talking Sean Connery-level.

But in the footage I've seen of Brown his Scottish accent didn't seem that thick. In fact, I didn't even know he was Scottish until seeing this movie, but then I don't live in the UK so what do I know?

So my question is for Brits - was Brown's Scottish accent that thick and noticeable in real-life? And did it change over the years, like did he maybe tone it down when he ran for and became PM?
