Why couldn't they just grab Le Chriffe before the poker game?

I know it's so everything can happen, but is there a legitimate reason that anyone can think of? Why couldn't they just grab Le Chriffe, and tell him they were ruining the game, and he either told them everything and got their protection, or they'd either hand him to his angry clients or kill him themselves. Why did he HAVE to lose fair and square at the game? Wouldn't just preventing the game from happening make him desperate enough for help? And if he was so afraid of his clients killing him, wouldn't just threatening to kill him themselves work?

I can't remember if the film goes over this, but in the book, if I'm remembering this right, the idea is to force Le Chiffre to talk because he has no allies and nowhere to run. If they grab him, Le Chiffre's clientele will be angry, but they'll be ticked off at MI:6. If they spank him at poker, although clearly intentionally an op, the difference is that Le Chiffre stole their money and used it to finance his gambling habits. That's the betrayal and that's what will make them really furious.
