I laughed when she drowned the cat

It was just so over the top I couldn't really take it seriously. It was like Salad Days from Monty Python. That being said I would like to point out a few things to some of the posters on here. First of all anyone trying to justify or even rationalize her decision within the context of the film is an idiot. Drowning is torture. It is just as bad if not worse than having to live with the disease. Also anyone trying to say she didn't have any other options is an idiot. Many people on this board have pointed out plenty of other options she had given her financial situation. She could have ran over the bag with her car tire and it would have been less painful for the cat. Secondly anyone that thinks this scene was necessary is an idiot. It wasn't even a relevant plot point, let alone something that was crucial to the film. It didn't even have any shock value. I saw it coming from a mile away, and when it happened I merely chuckled at the thought that I was currently watching a movie where someone was drowning a kitten. Some people were even actually trying to compare this to Old Yeller. No, what the kid did in Old Yeller actually made sense, not to mention I actually felt some emotion about what was happening in Old Yeller. Old Yeller was a GOOD film. Winter Passing is like 6 hours of wide angle shots of trees, horrible music, people asking each other if they are ok, and oh yeah there's a total non-sequitor about drowning a kitten somewhere in that jumbled mess. I mean I like Zooey Deschenel, I like Will Ferrel, and like artsy and unconventional stuff. So this movie should have been a perfect fit, but this was just boring, and by boring I don't mean it was too slow. I mean it was boring. Broken Flowers is slow, but it is a good film. Winter Passing is not. However it was still better than the third season of Heroes.

Really? You want to call us idiots? You are either a troll, or just a person who doesn't know how to analyze films.

"Drowning is torture"

You're right. In fact, the movie says it. Her mother contemplates killing herself saying that drowning would be too much torture, and shooting herself would be too messy. The cat drowning is a foreshadowing of that scene, and also a connection between Reese and her mother. The drowning showed Reese's reactions to a slow and painful death. She would rather have a torture that would result in death rather than dragging it along. I just have to say that you are a grade A moron for not finding any connections. You saw it at surface level and refused to try and dissect the scene where there are obvious deeper points. Think before you embarrass yourself.

I didn't "refuse to dissect the scene", I just don't really care about your precious connections. They don't save the film. Also I only said the people on here defending her actions "within the context of the film" were idiots, meaning people who sympathize with the character's actions, not the screenwriter's.

By the way, I always think before I embarrass myself.

Why would you write about something if you don't want to make the connections? Movies like this are more than what's just presented on the surface level. You said it was just for "shock value," but to make that statement it only makes sense to try and figure out why it was actually there. The only way it would have been there for shock value is if they never made a cut after they put the kitten in the bag. This movie is all about the connections. What kind of movies do you watch? Your right, her actions were inexcusable. She definitely had enough money to take care of it. The point of the scene was to show her personality, not her income.

I watch all kinds of movies. Like i said there are even slow-paced symbolic films that I like. For instance I mentioned that Broken Flowers was good.

Broken Flowers definitely has a lot of symbolic moments. Jarmusch is a great filmmaker. Why would you be willing to find the connections in those films, but not in this one?

I went in to both movies with an open mind, but Winter Passing was not an enjoyable viewing experience. That's all there is to it.

she could have taken the kitty to a shelter and just dropped it off and left. it would still be hard to do but she could ditch it and not have to pay for them to euthenize it. something like that would've made more sense and been more humane. it kind of made me not like her character at all. it helped me realize she was nutso but too disturbing man.

reply

The scene was also meant to show how cold-hearted and desperate she was; just like the moments when she was hurting her hand to see if she could feel anything.
Still, I agree with the original poster that it was over the top and unecessary.
