It does sound stupid. That would totally convince me that the whole thing is a bunch of BS. These people supposedly went through quite an ordeal, not to mention Elizabeth Smart (who, as they say, has been traumatized a great deal).
The Smart's heartfelt speeches are already losing most of their credibility with all the book and movie deals going on. If they were to be cast in the movie, the Smart's would really prove themselves as phony.
IMO, they already have in a way, but many still seem to diagree.

You are all so rude! You all have no idea what Elizabeth went through for those nine months! I live in Salt Lake City and my family and I where one of the first people to start to help out with the whole thing. You did not see the saddness in everyone's eyes. You weren't the one that had to light the candle thinking the some of us may never see her again. Why would you even say that every thing that went on was BS. They lost their daughter for nine months, never knowing if she was going to alriht or what was happening to her.

Elizabeth: You like pain....trying wearing a corset!

Again, it's not about that. Maybe I wasn't there to "light the candle", but I was stricken with sadness, fearing the worst.
But now, half a year later, I see a different picture of the Smart's. A much uglier one.
People will go to great lengths for money. We're certainly seeing that happening now with this movie and all......

I also live in SLC and I was very close to this in the early going with the searchs and getting the pictures of Elizabeth out. But even I have to admit that this whole thing was very odd from the beginning. The police botched it and thought Richard Ricci was their man, so they tried to change the facts to fit the suspect they had in mind. And then Ed Smart came out and asked for someone to exhonerate Ricci. For what? The man was never charged with this crime. And rightfully so. Elizabeth also had more chances to get away or tell someone, and she didn't. Millions of people would have turned the real kidnapper in if for nothing else then the reward money. This movie was very similar. It was the families telling of the story which took liberties with the facts to fit their version of things.
