ceremony at the beginning

What was the ceremony at the beginning of the film?

At first I thought it was a funeral because everyone was dressed in white, but can someone verfy or correct me please?

Hi, I watched it the other night and I remember him saying something about "your memorial rite" It was all very much focused around Lady Cho (the ceremony).

I, too, am unsure what exactly she was commemorating, but the fact she was wearing white shows she is paying respects to someone who is deceased. Did anyone else get any hints to who it was? I do not recall any direct mention of what the memorial rite was for. I'm also unsure what the significance is of Jo-won needing to be notified of when Lady Cho is finished paying her respects at the memorial rite. Perhaps it was a memorial for someone of importance to both of them?

Poor script, poor continuity, smarmy. That describes this film.
