This could have used a couple more drafts

Just watched this movie last night, with some expectation because I love Topher Grace and have been following his career since "That 70's".
I was hugely disapointed, because the main problem was in the script, since to me it was a few drafts away from being good. And it wasn't - to me, ofcourse.
The scenes were too informative at the begining of the film, and the relationship between the leads was fast and not very believeble. How could he have LOVED her so fast, right after her taking him home to have sex like 10 minutes after they met??
And the plot development was so soapy, with her best frined sleeping with him. I don't know, the whole thing did not work for me at all!

It didn't work for me at all, either, and I'm inclined to like movies of this ilk. But above and beyond the subject matter, I like quality films.

I kept hoping the film would make sense to me but it didn't. I agree with you about it being ridiculous that he "loved" her so fast.

I was also wondering about the bestfriendship with Missy. If Missy stole the boyfriend that Louise loved so dearly, how did they end up BFF? And why did Missy stick her nose into all of this now? I also don't believe that Missy recognized "Scott's" voice on the phone. That was too much of a stretch for me.

The ex-husband thread just seemed "there" and didn't really add anything except to serve as some weak plot device for why Louise might be swept away by all of this.

I'll second the thought: It did NOT work for me, either!

despite the movie being kind of unbelievable at times, it is by far better than the novel. Every English professor I've spoken with over the years agrees.

Though, given that Helen Schulman is such a smart person, it's hard to comprehend why such an awful book was published.

I took a look at the deleted scenes on the DVD and they helped to make the film more believable and give it a different slant. Laura Linney and the rest of the cast are all so good and the cinematography is great and the art direction wonderful but the editing is so awful. The story seems to have potential but it becomes so disjointed and soapy. I can't believe that this movie could have so much talent in its productiuon and end up such a mess. I really wanted to like it. Laura Linney really puts her whole ass into everything she does.

I tend to agree. I just wasn't feeling a lot of the dialogue or the direction the plot took. It had a lot of promise, but in the end, just didn't do it for me. I felt the same way about "Birth"--another "reincarnation" film. Guess that storyline either does not work for me in general..or they are both less than stellar films. :P
