Much as I admire Ben Kingsley, there has only ever been one Fagin!

Polanski's version may be a bit more faithful to the novel than the 1968 musical Oliver!, but there is just no competing with Ron Moody's portrayal of Fagin.

Ron Moody for the win!

Well, I don't know...certainly Alec Guinness did a credible job in the 1948 version.

So glad you said that, Schmelie. I love Ron Moody's portrayal! Take away the music, and you still have a wonderful depiction of a quite sinister and manipulative character.

You might very well think that. I couldn't possibly comment.

I felt that there were flashes of inspiration from Kingsley, which hinted that he could have been on his way to delivering the definitive dramatic portrayal of Fagin - darker psychological shadings, more realistic, without the likeability of Moody's - if he wasn't constrained by Polanski's pedestrian, unambitious direction, and the awful cast surrounding him.
