It's been a while since I've seen this, but, I recall, he saw her in the video he had made before he met her. I may be wrong though. Have to watch this again as it's a fantastic film.

At the ending ( suicide of her ) you can see a small bottle on her bed ( Sleeping pills ) - havent seen that in the HK DVD ( bad picture), on the korean dvd it can be clearly seen
