Gerard Kelly

Lots of praise has (deservedly) been heaped on the two leads and, of course, the director who can't put a foot wrong, but I thought Gerard Kelly stole the show with his one scene as the parish priest.

He had a kind of *beep* you' swagger about him and the venom with which he blasted Roison was one of the most powerful moments in the film. Great performance! Even if it lasted just a couple of minutes...

I don't have a problem with Gerard Kelly, who is rather good in this scene... But Whereas it was easy to identifiy with about every other character (the father, Rukhsana, Tahara, Hammid, etc.) that priest seems (at first anyway) like the only downright badie in the picture. It seems difficult to accept that this character has his own intricate and deeply human reasons to act as he does, as of the others. Yet indeed, one can imagine... having to endure a life a chastity might make him jealous... Or his faith is very strong, or whatever. But no hint is given about how to get close to him, how to allow him to be as human as the others and not an evil force getting in the way of the "goodies".

Ever since BBC1's awesome comedy "City Lights" in the middle eighties Kelly has always played a really bad guy. Awesome actor.

I think he got slashed in the face on his doorstep by a robber a few years ago. Ever since then Kelly = Bad Guy on TV and in movies.

Gerard Kelly is a great actor.I think he did well in the scene as a Catholic priest. The only thing about it is that he might have OVERPLAYED it a little bit for most Catholic priest aren't like that.

I bought the DVD movie and watched that scene of the Parish Priest a couple of times and think it's just downright funny. She having the Irish accent and he the Scottish one. However, if she is still married to her husband, indeed she lied to Casim in the hotel room in Spain where she tells Casim I WAS married, the priest is right, what's holding her back of getting a DIVORCE???

It's a tough one. Why does anyone do the things they do? But it IS a very funny scene. You want to hate him because he's being so dogmatic and all she wants to do is live her life but his character is so human and funny. And then you realise he's right and Roisin's making life difficult for herself.

I like the way he keeps smoking throughout the scene, wagging his finger. Great acting. "Every Tom, Dick and Mohammed" Great line :)

Very FUNNY and HUMOROUS indeed, of course it should be "Every Tom, Dick and Harry" and the fact that he said Mohammed was SPOT ON. It means the Parish priest knew EXACTLY whom Roisin was sleeping with. Bit silly for him to ask her if he is Catholic or willing to become one. Over Casim's parents DEAD BODIES I'm sure, hahaha. Also, don't understand why Roisin is so upset about her "Life, her job, her Career" I mean the Parish priest makes it sound so bad to teach the PROTESTANT kids, heck, at least she will still have a job TEACHING right? Who cares if you teach Catholics or Protestants? I just LOVE this movie and will watch it many more times. By the way, I do think Casim is a good DJ.

I do not think Roisin lied to Casim. I think Roisin was legally divorced. However, since the catholic church does not recognize divorce the priest tells her "in the eyes of the church, you are still a married woman". In order to get the catholic church to acknowledge that she is no longer married to her first husband, she would have to obtain an annulment like the priest said. Otherwise, the church sees her as still married and therefore ineligible to remarry in a catholic ceremony, but she could remarry in a civil ceremony. Also, I think if her first husband died in the interim she would not need an annulment because then the church would no longer view her as a married woman, but a widow.
