I'm shocked. I always thought ex-international drug traffickers were good, honest folk...

Yeah, he's obviously not a nice person. But the way he and many of the other drug runners were portrayed in Cocaine Cowboys didn't make them seem too bad.
His early life for example was painted as someone who was just a bit of a bad guy committing petty crimes, but nothing serious. Turns out he was an enforcer for the Mafia and was involved in kidnappings.

So the article isn't really surprising, but it reveals how flawed this documentary may be.

What else do you think people join for? The article never said he was a woman beater.. and unsubstantiated gossip from a bitter ex wife isnt exactly top notch journalism.

This guy sounded like a loser telling his story.
Total loser.

The guy was a monster, read his book. His stories about torturing people in Vietnam by slowly cutting their skin off alone were *beep* up, but he did lot of terrible things and ruined hundreds (thousands) of lives from his personal violence. When Roberts eventually got tortured in Mexico I was rooting for his jailers.
