There's a quote I don't understand about the liquor store shooting

The liquor store shooting was the first big shooting that happened that they say started off the big war that went trough the 80's. One person they interviewed claimed they heard a witness at the shooting say "It was like Miami Vice without the cameras"

That shooting took place in 1979. Miami Vice was not a TV show until 5 years later in 1984

Yeah to their credit, it was never mentioned -when- this interview took place. I would imagine it took place a good while after the incident occurred, as you have to remeber this was during the La Violencia era, so talking to the police or the media would get you killed just as quickly as the people they were sent in to kill in the first place.

At the end of "Reloaded" when they mentioned how Miami Vice started up after the cocaine wars I had to pause, rewind to make sure I heard it right then thought "Wait...what?". Because I distinctly remembered hearing that bit about the show being referenced in regards to the liquor store shooting. I honestly have no way to explain this but hopefully someone else can.

The line wasn't about the liquor store shooting, it was about the shooting at the doral hotel(or something like that). The comment was in the recent(when the film was made) interview with the female reporter who says that no one reacted to the shooting because it was like they were shooting an ep. of miami vice. Her comment of course isn't correct( no MV at the time of the shooting) but its just a simple mistake, and I can't think of a pre miami vice show or movie she could have said(beside scarface) that would have fit.

I always took it to mean that the witness when describing the incident later (as in years later) explained in shorthand, easy cultural reference, that it was like watching a scene out of Miami Vice. Not that the witesss said at the time of the shooting, it was like a episode of Miami Vice without the cameras.

I've listened to the commentary a couple of times and they are always referencing Scarface and Miami Vice, even the movie Blow, which were all done prior to the documentary, but are saying "hey this event depicted in XYZ (but filmed prior to the documentary) are either accurate (Scarface/Blow/Miami Vice) or inaccurate for the same fictional representations.
