Mark Wahlberg as Jon Roberts?!

So I just watched Cocaine Cowboys, which I thought was a great documentary, very insightful. I came on the 'net to do some further research into the people featured in the documentary, and saw this little news item:

I know alot of people, even on this board, mentioned the possibility of a film, and it looks like it may happen! That particular news item was posted less than a month ago, so let's just hope it doesn't fall into development hell or something.

Forgive me if I'm wrong, but isn't Jon Roberts Hispanic?? Why is he being played by a white guy?

reply

I'm pretty sure Jon Roberts isn't hispanic. If he is, it's not a noticeable amount at least. You might be thinking of Jorge "Rivi" Ayala, former hitman for The Godmother and one of the other main guys featured in Cocaine Cowboys.

reply

Just hold on a minute. Wasn't "Blow" based on these guys, with Johnny Depp playing the John Roberts character? At least, thinking back to it, I would think it was

"The devil is amongst us!"

reply

blow was based on George Jung. Depp played George Jung.

George Jung was full of crap. Most all the drugs were coming though Florida and very few though LA at the time. 95% of all the pot was coming through Florida and then coke started coming with the pot and then it started to grow from there. Coke took over smugglers because of the worth and weight. After Ronald Reagan declared war on Florida the drugs came though LA though lots of gang memebers and the killing started in LA.

There were lots of drug smugglers in Florida besides Jon Roberts and Mickey Munday. I grew up were Mickey grew up and there was little dirt runways all over Florida that were used. Everybody was selling drugs and there are lots of great stories like theirs with many other smugglers. Lots of friends who got caught and very few did not.; .

I hope Wahlberg and DiCaprio don't play the leads if this movie gets made, neither fits the part, and with those two guys in the movie, you're guaranteed an over the top "epic" like The Departed and a movie made with the purpose of winning an Oscar.

Jon was 100% NY guinea mobster.

I think Wahlberg could do it now. Now that he is a little older and not so fresh & pretty, he can portray this type of guy fairly well in my opinion.

...in my late Sunday afternoon, 'speak before thinking' kind of fantasy-casting brainstorm......

He's OK for a 90 lb punk from Boston.

jon Roberts should be a tough NY Italian, like Deniro 30 years ago.

Read his book and you'll know what I mean.

reply

I also read the book.they better cast the right actor mafioso guy for JRs role..MW should play one of the cops

reply

I so agree! The book is awesome! if they're basing it off the book. they better get a dam good actor!
