question about ending (spoiler alert!)

I liked the movie. I thought it was beautiful and haunting and very real. Grief can ruin people. I loved the end, where she tells her family how she feels and pays back her employer - sure signs that she's finally emerging from her sadness and disconnection. It's the final shot of the movie that confused me - is she in her house? That doesn't seem likely; she's at the retirement home taking photos, right? So why is the cop car pulling up? Is it coming for her? It seems like she has a smile on her face, knowing it's there - is she happy? Is she going to be arrested for breaking into that woman's home? Seems an odd thing to be happy about. As I said, I really liked the movie, but I was scratching my head about the meaning of that final moment.

Both Jodi at the photo shop and Lee-Ann Charbonneaux, the woman who hit and killed Joel, were looking through pictures of Molly, Dennis, and Happy taken by Molly during the break-in - among other photos. The cops had them dead to rights.

I wondered how Lee-Ann got these, then remembered Molly trying almost desperately to tell Joel something about photos she'd taken. "I have something to tell you !". I think she was trying to confess, and went back to the house and left the pictures to be found, or, if they were Polaroids , left them there. IMHO, of course.

Yes, she was at the retirement home at the end, and in a very brief scene we see two cops come looking for Dennis, who's under a porch.

Why she implicated herself, and why she smiled ion seeing the cops pull up, *I have no idea; except that she did tell her family she was "coming apart."

*Sorry; just realized this doesn't exactly answer your question!
