depression and hoarding issues

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems the bulk of people involved with these interventions have serious issues with depression and related issues (hoarding, compulsive shopping etc..)This show, while helping with superficial issues, does not address the deeper, underlying issues that caused the featured guests to reach those awful breaking points.

I must give credit to those who go public with their plight and risk ridicule.
It takes a lot of balls to come clean and ask for help in an international forum.

well, after a while I think the mess of the place adds to the depression and compunds it-giving the subjects a feeling of hoplessness and loss of control over their own lives...maybe the fresh start of a clean environment that is under control again is the catalyst that the show hopes might work. It seems that the subjects always say its been a gradual buildup over years and years, so the jumpstart may be sudden enough to give them another chance. Even I feel better mood-wise after a good solid cleaning and my place was never that bad.

I agree. I've been through stages where I have been "down" but when I would finally get the urge to do my laundry after a couple of weeks and clean out my room (I'm in college...) I'd feel much better.
Granted, I have never gotten as bad as the mass majority of those on the show! The worst that I have ever done is realizing that the beer bottle I found under my bed was from my move-in party at the start of the semester-- it was the end of the semester.

I believe depression can cause you to do this without too much time involved. And then it builds up - which leads to more depression...until finally there is a point where you "just don't care" anymore.

Also, in some of these families it is one person tasked with doing everything and no one else helps...so that gets old as well...and builds up quickly as well.

This is not a show about lecturing people to get help...but I'm sure "off camera" time is given for some to get psychological help if need be. To berate them on camera about their mental issues would not be this show...this show only deals with the cleaning element...but I'm sure they know this and that person need professional help...and recommend it.
