One thing I find helpful is if one of your pets has an accident on the carpet, sprinkle a mixture of baking soda and borax on the wet spot. It will absorb the urine and prevent odors from lingering. The only drawback is that it often takes a few days to dry, which is essential before attempting to vacuum it up.
