What doujinshi was this based on?

I'm a little confused, cos it doesn't tell you WHAT doujinshi this was based on in the DVDs. Anyone know anything about it?

reply

Look in the opening sequence on the DVDs. They tell you right there. It's in the bottom right corner of the screen, but I can't remember which part it's at. Just watch that part of the screen and don't skip the intro!

It's "Charcoal Feathers in Old Home", but isn't a doujinshi a fan-comic? so what other anime was it based on?

Somebody once told me, when they saw the birds, it made them want to go on a journey.

reply

As far as I know there is only the doujinshi and no other animé/manga it's based on. Have a look at the "Manga?"-Thread, there is a link to the manga recently published in the US (I guess). So probably there is a "proper + professional" manga now...

A doujin is a self-made, usually self-published comic. It's not always fan based, a lot of doujin artists make original stories and characters. In this case, ABe started making his own comic, got a couple of parts done (basically what happens in the first episode) then stopped, because it was being made into an anime series.

He's done some other stuff with Haibane Renmei, but nothing that really adds any story outside of the series.

The Doujinshi was based off of a book by Haruki Murakami called "Hard-Boild Wonderland and the End of the World." Great book. If you enjoyed Haibane, you should read the book. The book is very different then the Anime though, so don't expect any more clarification on the anime's plot, the two are almost completely different.

reply

Thanks, apparently though the doujinshi went nowhere and they just made the show.

The world is not beautiful, therefore it is.

reply

Ah, so it was based on Hard Boiled Wonderland' after all. I just came to this board to ask the very question, so thanks for answering it.

Yes, the idea of the enclosed sanctuary is the one lifted from Hard Boiled Wonderland, but other than that the feel of the two stories are massively different.

I've read the hard boiled wonderland and I'm confident the ending will be dissatisfying for most readers. Certainly it has been influencial on many manga, but it was also a relatively empty story whoose only claim to fame was the unusual narrative and idea of a man simultaneously straddling two parallel worlds (one of which was in his own head,) etc. Although I enjoyed it because I was trying to research the origin of Jun Maeda animes like Clannad, and also Haibane Renmei, I wouldn't reread it, and I wouldn't recommend to anyone else.

Life is just too short for subpar characterizations and draggy stories.

....@ wastelock, yeah I just read the doujins even though they're only 4 chapters. I wouldn't recommend wasting your time on them.
