What were the tests for...

The ones given to each girl as they arrived at the school? In the beginning of the movie. The test itself seemed to have only symbols of some sort on it. Anyone know what exactly were they testing for?

To see if the girl had powers or the potential of being a witch. Apparently her test showed that she was special and powerful.

Wasn't it the fact that the girls that had the gifts spilled blood on the tests?
