The conditions concerning the chests

Would anybody really risk giving up all women by choosing one of the chests to get Portia for a wife? I guess the idea is that in those times, they would accept the conditions if wrong because they were afraid the ghost of Portia's dead daddy would rise up from the grave and haunt the suitor if he disobeyed the conditions and just married again anyway. I know today nobody would even honor a stupid thing, right?
