He's Old; She's Ugly

Sorry, but Clooney and Zwelliger had no chemistry whatsoever, and they were both wrong for the parts.

He is DEFINITELY waaaay too long in the tooth, too old and wrinkled looking, and too flabby, to be playing an athlete.

I did like the atmosphere, comedy, and photograpy; and I appreciate the fact that it wasn't filled with profanity like most Hollywood garbage out there nowadays.

How can you say that they had no chemistry
The three leads had plenty of chemistry
between them. Did you watch the same
movie asd I, watch it a couple of more times,
you may even enjoy, or did you not watch it
at all.

George and Renee have been friends and that
one kiss was certainly hot.

George is aging like fine wine.
George has chemistry with all
of his co-stars, both women and
men-it's a part of his
personality.

and it's Zellweger-not Zwelliger.
and the movie was set in 1925.

I thought she was ok. She looks good the the period clothes.

George Cloony's character was SUPPOSED to be old, that's why they kept mentioning his age...

I get so tired of movie goers whose idea of perfection can only be achieved through the glow of young actors.

Clooney's character was old.

I thought Renee did a good job. Renee was never a 'classic' beauty even when young. She's her own person.

My big criticism was that the hairpieces she wore were some of the worst I've ever seen on screen. They were going for a strawberry blonde look but they came off a really dirty ugly blonde color. There also a couple of scenes where she was not shot in the most flattering light.

I liked that Clooney tried to re-create a screen chemistry from the by-gone era: Claudette Colbert & Clark Gable in the Academy Award winning It Happened One Night; or the Rosalind Russell/Cary Grant film My Girl Friday.

Movie goers today need too much eye candy as opposed to getting involved with story, plot, characterization.

I enjoyed the film. Lots of fun with the slapstick on the football field. I could have used more of that. The script was snappy and fast-paced. And it definitely had an antique look which I loved.

Clooney makes excellent choices.

Yeah, I agree. Do you mean the scene after she storms out of the lobby? Mr Clooney wasn't doing her any favours. And it made the wig look so obvious.

reply

yeah I noticed rene has started looking a little odd lately, not ugly but certainly not as pretty as she usta be. she is reminding me of the woman that does lisa simpson's voice.

reply

Someone didn't watch the film properly.

As previously mentioned Clooney plays a 45 year old man who should have retired long ago, he actually sys his age in the movie.

I felt that Renee's hairstyles were not appropriate for the time, she has the Veronica Lake peekaboo look for much of the film and that is 15 years after this is set.

I have to agree on the lack of chemistry, I have no idea why that is? But, I do feel she was miscast, I kept hoping that Rosalind Russell would turn up and take her place as Lexie or perhaps Tina Fey, who is sharp and genuinely witty.

As for Renee being ugly? I wonder if you are the epitomie of beauty? No I thought not and ravishing beauty does not neccessarily mean huge talent.

Life isn't a rehearsal, so make this one your best performance

reply

I also agree about the lack of chemistry, which is surprising because they are both fantastic actors.

Zellweger made the mistake of trying too hard to be Kate Hepburn (or whomever) instead of just acting. There is a falseness about her performance, which put distance between her & everyone else, and IMO is the reason the movie doesn't really work.

A good director might have noticed this early on and given her some points. However, when the director is also the main actor, well .......

reply

Im sorry, and I mean this in the most respectable way possible, but Tina Fey is awful and I think almost single-handedly ruined SNL- granted it has ups and downs and was definitely in a tailspin when they "gave" her the show, but she pretty much put the last nail in and covered it up with dirt. Plus, I dont think she wouldve been able to be "31"...Renee just squeaked by. I really dont have any suggestions to offer that wouldve been better.

reply

Damfino, you were hoping that Rosalind Russell would turn up? The last time I checked, the wonderful Ms. Russell had been dead for years. Unfortunately there are no stars like her these days. What a gem she was!

I agree that Renee's hairstyle was closer to the '40s than the '20s. She would have looked more authentic if she had the style she wore in "Chicago" or even a variation of the bob that Catherine Zeta Jones wore in that movie. Nevertheless, I still thought she looked adorable in "Leathernecks."

reply

He may be getting older, but he'll probably look better after he's been dead for a few years than most of us look right now.

reply

I agree. Clooney is a gorgeous man - and he just seems to get better too. I think maybe he was made to be middle-aged...

Even if they didn't have great chemistry, HE, by himself, is swoon-worthy!

What are you anyway--7 years old?

Flabby? Are you kidding me? There's pics of him in the tabloids hanging at the beach and he doesn't have an ounce of fat on him--he's in top condition.

What do you look like by the way?

reply

He was suppose to be old

I think he passes off for 45 in the movie
