John Krasinski's character was based on Red Grange. George Clooney's character seems to be based on Johnny "Blood" McNally. Johnny would climb up on trains, water towers, start bar fights, just raising hell. He was also a womanizer.

I'm sure you're right about Clooney's character being based on McNally, but this movie was really an attempt to make an old school screwball comedy. Unfortunately that kind of comedy doesn't seem to work very well with modern audiences for some reason.
