Yes, you definitely should.

The movie is just a continuation of the series. In the series you get to know more about the characters and their backgrounds. The only real difference is that when Simon tells the rest of the crew about River getting freed from the Alliance he doesn't go into much detail and makes it sound more like he just financed her escape rather than participated in it.

EDIT: I should probably add that their have been many people who have posted both here and on the Firefly board who, like you, didn't know there was a series when they watched the movie. Pretty much all of them were glad they watched the series. Their only regret is that there isn't more.

It was my pleasure. As good as the pilot is, as they used to say in vaudeville, "You ain't seen nothing yet."

By the way, FOX originally ran the episodes out of order. Make sure you watch them in the intended order rather than broadcast order. That order is as follows: "Serenity," "The Train Job," "Bushwhacked," "Shindig," "Safe," "Our Mrs. Reynolds," "Jaynestown," "Out of Gas," "Ariel," "War Stories," "Trash," "The Message," "Heart of Gold," "Objects in Space."
"Serenity" refers to the pilot episode, not the movie.

Hope you enjoy the show.

Firefly is totally worth watching. It's one of my favorite science-fiction shows. Hate that Fox cancelled the show. It had so much potential.
