Was Shepard Book An Operative?

Ever since I watched the scene where Book and Mal were talking about The Operative, I've come to the conclusion that Book was at one time an Operative. How else would he know so much about them? Does anyone else have an opinion on this?

Joss and Zack Whedon wrote a graphic novel called "The Shepherd's Tale" (http://firefly.wikia.com/wiki/Serenity:_The_Shepherd's_Tale Caution: contains spoilers). It gives what Joss considers the official history of Shepherd Book. His background doesn't include being an operative according to Joss Whedon.

I haven't read that, but there were certainly numerous incidents/comments during the TV series that suggested he was some sort of badazz in a previous life.

My first thought after seeing Serenity was that Shepard was an Operative. But after reading a Shepard's Tale, I know his backstory. Its worth reading.

As others have mentioned, the Shepherd's Tale graphic novel reveals Book's background. He was a criminal before he started working for the Alliance. During an operation, he got a lot of people killed.

So, I keep seeing this mistake online over and over again, and I absolutely can't stand it anymore. I just have to say something.

The word is SHEPHERD, not "shepard." S-H-E-P-H-E-R-D!
