The movie's sposed to be about Drum, the first black South African magazine. And about how its journalists struggled to write under apartheid censorship. I saw it at the weekend, and man oh man, its mainly about the American actor and his struggle with the accent!!?!!

I agree completely with mrmcmurtysa about the accent - it really was appalling. I was quite upset, because apart from that I was enjoying the film (I didn't finish watching it). It was a real pity that an American actor was cast in the role - we have plenty of fabulous actors in SA that would have been great in this part. The South African accent (and African accents in general) are apparently difficult to do - I think the best one I've heard by an American so far was Don Cheadle in Hotel Rwanda.
Apparently the casting of an American actor was due to conditions related to the funding of the film (I read this in an interview with the director) - what can you do?
I think this had the potential to be a great film, but I was a bit disapointed.

i think

this film deals with the subject matter of apartheid policy and that is what makes him precious

Meschack Mavuso would have made a far better Mr. Drum then Taye bloody Diggs, anyway!

Where's That Monkey, I Want To Shoot Something!

reply

I agree! I just watched some of it (two minutes) and Taye Diggs seemed to be carrying a Carribean accent at best!!
In South Africa we have a rich and diverse culture with eleven official languages (can't differentiate between some - but whatever) and they all come with their own linguistic quirks - but Carribean isn't one of them!

Bruce Willis was a ghost the whole time
