Philip Seymour Hoffman (CAPOTE) vs Heath Ledger (BROCKEBACK MOUNTAIN)

Who deserved the oscar more?
As much as i loved Philip's performance,i'd go with Heath because it was more natural and came straight from the heart.Philip's performance was a little bit too "mecanic" for my taste.Brilliant but not as natural as Heath's.

What do you think?

I get tired of hearing this, but I think Philip Seymour Hoffman deserved the Oscar. Besides, how could Philip Seymour Hoffman's portrayal of the outlandish Truman Capote be 'natural'?

Why do we bring this subject up NOW after Heath's death?

I think it was basically Phil VS Heath that year, but I still think Heath should have won. I've always thought that (yes even before he died). In the words of Daniel Day Lewis, he was perfect. Hoffman was great but I just feel that Heath deserved it more. Hoffman didnt appear to put as much effort into the role but Heath put so much effort into it that he became Ennis and it was all just natural to him.

If not Heath,Joaquin Phoenix should have won for WALK THE LINE.Phillip deserves it more for DOUBT.

Ledger, of course. To me, watching his performance in BBM was a life-altering experience. I still remember his face, his words, his expressions although I only saw the film once. As you said, it all came from the heart. As much as I love Hoffman, I have to say that his performance came more from the head. If I have to choose between the two, I choose the heart, always.

Sorry, if my writing looks wierd. English is not my native language.

What a great question! I just saw Capote last night, and I saw Brokeback last year (both on DVD). Hoffman's performance was incredible: he transformed himself. I felt it was both a "mind" performance, and a "heart" performance. When you watch Hoffman discuss the movie on the DVD extras, you almost have to blink twice: that's the actor who played Capote? I have to give the edge to Hoffman. That said, Ledger's own performance was unforgettable. I haven't seen Dark Knight yet, but Ledger's character hasn't really left my imagination since I've seen Brokeback. And I think I'll be able to say the same with Hoffman's.

i've so often asked myself this same question, and in the end, I would give the edge to Heath. both of these fine actors mastered their roles, and were utterly convincing and thorough, but Heath's performance, even before his death, really affected me and left me feeling an emptiness that his character experienced. still, I think their performances were somewhat similar in that Heath was such a specific character and yet so understated, and Hoffman played such a flamboyant character without making him over the top. the insecurities portrayed by both actors were spectacular.

Heath by far.

As much as I enjoyed Hoffman's transformation in Capote, nothing will EVER reach Heath's performance in Brokeback Mountain. Heath didn't play Ennis. He WAS Ennis.

Hoffman deserved it.

I have my own mind. And as a reward, I get to use it.
