Title?

Fantastic movie indeed. Can anyone tell something about the meaning of the title?

The only thing that soothes her/makes her happy is the vibration of her cell phone, eventhough she never picks it up.
It's quite vague, I wouldn't have known if I hadn't seen the description myself.

This movie would be improved if it was actually about vibrators. I'd rather watch a rabbit vibrator twirl than this movie. http://www.pleasuremenow.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWCATS&Categor y=506

- I think the key to the title is the beginning scene in the supermarket, when she meets the truckdriver. She sees him comming in and finds him 'tasty' (at least in the subtitles i have). He comes closer, and when they look at each other the mobile in the pocket of her jacket suddenly starts vibrating. The mobile is visible through the leather like an x-ray, on her left chest, it's pink and it vibrates. It's not really a mobile, it's her heart, and it beats as a reaction to the man. It might indicate that she falls in love with him, or, if that seems a bit rash, that she somehow connects to him.

As the story evolves we realize how lonely she is, and that she obviously has a problem connecting to others. When the mobile/heart goes off, she looks at it in suprise. She herself is aware of her loneliness, and suprised that someone is able to move her like that. She then follows him out straight away, and joins him in the truck without any explanation...it just appears the natural thing to do. He too accepts it as such. Maybe they are meant to be together, even if just for a short while. They both seem to think so.

As they travel together they become more intimate (I don't just mean physically) and slowly she becomes able to open up more. It doesn't matter that they tell lies to each other, about who they are or what they are doing, the feeling of companionship and trust is, IMO, what matters. In the end she is a changed person, 'turned into something good' (again, my subtitles). So in the end, he could be regarded as the person who made her vibrate, feel again.
I don't know if the Japanese title is different, but as far as the English title is concerned, I find it makes perfect sense.
I'd love to hear other theories about this though.

Hehe, how funny that someone got fooled by the title, I had a hard time myself googleing for it when i first heard about the movie!

The title refers to the phone but also to the truck engine which has to constantly remain running and provides its own vibration (according to the original novel).

For me, also the spiritual sense that we all have an energy vibration, which, when in the presence of others (whether one person,or an entire arena) creates a specific mixture of vibration.
Since the movie has a highly spiritual under-current, that's how I saw it.

The phone and truck as well. The shot of the phone/heart through her coat pocket is stylistically unlike anything else in the film, and although I did not think about it until reading the above posts, I agree that it was her "heart" responding, also perhaps a sign that his and her energy (vibration) somehow set off the phone, as a sign to follow her instincts and have the upcoming experiences with this stranger.

Plus it's an evocative title that catches your eye I suppose, from a distributor's POV.

Nice analysis mollycat. Thanks. I agree, and can't think of anything to add.
