When they investigated the burnt house and found the bodies of the murdered men, along with the bodies of the housekeeper and her daughter (who were assumed to be Belle Gunness and her daughter), the police arrested Ray Lampere and charged him with the murders. Meanwhile, Belle, presumably knowing that Ray would be the fallguy, took her daughter and left town.
