Never was a Neil Young Fan

Caught Greendale on the Sundance Channel and coming from the point of view of someone who only knew Neil Young's well known songs and CSNY stuff and basically nothing else, I LOVED Greendale. I thought it was brilliant, clever, nostalgic, thought provoking and showed the enormity of intelligence and insight of this man. I can't compare it to any of his other work because I haven't heard it, but I just ordered the DVD. So, Young has a new fan in me. Can any longtime fans let me know of any of his other work hat I would enjoy based on my enjoyment of this movie? Thanks!

*beep* up is a great song, get the live version from "weld" if ya can. I'd also recommend "comes a time" "after the gold rush" and "let's roll" to name a few.

After teh gold rush for sure, Freedom(nice mix of electric rockers and mellow),Harvest moon, and certainly his most important record is living with war which u can hear in its entirety at neilyoung.com personal fave cuts flags of freedom and restless consumer.

"Harvest" and "After the Gold Rush" are his most well-known albums. His latest, "Living With War" sounds good from what little I've heard.

TRANS!!!

Seriously, 'Trans' is reflected on as being Neil Young's worst album, but once you sort of take into account the reason for making the album, it's a bit more endearing.

I would not recommend 'Trans' immediately. But Neil is a fantastic songwriter, and he's had something to offer every generation. I'm glad he's still at it, and I'm glad for the Bridge School Benefit and everything Neil stands for...

Prairie Wind and Living with War are two recent releases that somewhat resembles Greendale.

But, as everyone has kinda made clear, you can't ask a Neil Young fan for a few. Harvest, Harvest Moon and Weld are absolute musts also.
And personally, I enjoy Mirror Ball which he made with Pearl Jam very much also. Its nowhere near as deep and reflective an album as the others but it is great rock'n'roll ;)

Is nobody going to recommend his finest album, Tonight's the Night?

Weld is excellent too.

I was just gonna say "Tonight's the Night" Neil's best album It's also kindof a story like album where all the songs tie together a somewhat.

If you liked the raw, minimalistic style of the music in Greendale, I would defintetly point you in the direction of his albums recorded with "Crazy Horse".

Also, as a kind of random thought, you might check out a Jim Jarmusch movie called "Dead Man". It is a raw and minimalistic western shot in black and white. The entire musical score is just Neil wailing on his electric guitar. Kind of a challenging movie, but I really love the ending.

Once in a while you get shown the light, in the strangest of places if you look at it right.

Sone of his best work are collaborations with Crosby Stills and Nash , and those with crazy horse. My favorite is Neil young and Crazy Horse's "Everybody knows this is nowhere"

The album "Zuma" is amazing - especially the track "Cortez the killer". I own all NY albums but my favorite has to be "After the Goldrush", as this was my first introduction to him by my Dad.

Hope this helps.

"Tonights the Night" "On The Beach" and "Ragged Glory" are my personnal favorite Neil Young albums. "Harvest" and "After The Goldrush" are more well known and great in their own right but I prefer the 3 mentioned above myself

I would say tonights the night, harvest and time fades away are my favorites. also everyone knows this is nowhere.

His recent live dvd entitled "heart of Gold" is really good too... I've watched it two or three times and could probably stand to keep watching it over and over!
