Helen Hunt's voice!

...Is seriously the most irritating sound my poor ears have ever had to endure. With literally EVERY sentence, she like...raises the last few words so it comes off like a question, rather than a statement or just plain dialogue. The inflection of her sentences, the high pitched tone at the end, it's just so wrong! And no joke, from start to finish she does it! She has no mercy on us!
Did anyone else notice this torture?

reply

Yes, how could you help but notice? It sounded like she was always very nervous. Her's was a terrible performance, but the movie sucked anyway.

reply

I thought exactly thiS!!!! I'm so happy someone else noticed haha. It seemed like she was merely reading lines as opposed to 'speaking' them from her character. Very annoying.

reply

WTF? I'm watching Helen Hunt's train wreck performance right now and wondering if it's possible to have her Oscar revoked!

reply

Yes I did. God awful. Oscar Wilde is turning in his grave. Helen hunt being cast as the femme fatale is terrible casting of epic proportions.

reply

OMG...I agree...Helen Hunt should never have been cast as a femme fatale...What were they thinking????????? ...It was too painful to watch...I shut off the movie after seeing Lord Wendemere (a much younger man) and Mrs. Erlynne (Hunt) trying to flirt in the antique shop...I thought I was gonna gag. Totally unbelievable!

Hunt has been great in a few movies where she was cast properly...What were they all thinking?

reply

She often has an irritating speaking manner. E.g., in "Dr. T. and His Women." I loved her in "As Good As It Gets" though. In this movie it sounded really fakey.

reply

Her talked in the most dull tone imaginable, and deserved a razzie nomination. I really, really disliked this movie and Hunt. I felt sick after seeing it...

I totally agree! I didn't buy her as the seductress Mrs Erlynne - and her voice irritated me to no end. I'm glad I'm not alone ? definitely miscast.

reply

That question mark showed up inadvertently above, was supposed to be '...' - weird

reply

Well, I didn't have to start a new thread because I agree completely with you! She DESTROYED what would probably have been quite a good film. So much of the film was good, from the fact it was based on something by Oscar Wilde to the sets and costumes...but I really can't say anything about the directing or acting because she should never, never, have been cast; Hunt, with her strident caterwauling, smashed the film to bits. What a shame. I disliked her in the sitcom that so many people loved, "Mad About You," and see what she did here - she proved me right.

Yes, Helen Hunt's voice is HORRIBLE in this film! It has a honk-like, nasally, pitchy sound. And like you said, she often ends her sentences as if they were a question or like an elderly woman that is having difficulty speaking.

As a casting director, she would've never made it past me with that horrendous speaking voice. Also, some of her facial expressions are not right for this role either.

EDIT: It just dawned on me: Helen's voice has a quality akin to one of those Kazoo musical instruments that they give kids. If you never got to hum/sing into one as kid, they're made with a vibrating wax paper section...creating that "honk-like, nasally, pitchy sound" to which I was referring in my above description. I just listened to her again. Yep, that's it. A Kazoo effect! :D

I'd like to mention that I don't hate Ms. Hunt. I am simply commenting on the strange quality of her voice.

reply

OuiOuiCloe - oh my gawd, YES! Her voice WAS torture. And she hardly had the look of a femme fatale.
