Not that it really matters, but...

Was Martin (D.B. Woodside) the black acupuncturist a gay character? Or just asexual? Jamie (Marguerite Moreau) had sex with practically everyone else she got close to.

maybe he didnt want to have sex with her? i think he seemed kinda gay too. Im watching it now i hope mick and jamie get back together!

The acupuncturist is just a friend, a guide or counselor for Jamie. Maybe an old chinesse man would have fit better, but it would have been such a terrible cliche.

Just because he doesn't want to have sex with her, it doesn't make him gay.

In the scene where Jamie is splashing her feet in his pool and smoking pot with the acupuncturist she asks him about his celibacy and decides to try it for three months. The clear implication throughout the film is that he is a holistic straight fellow that is going through a celibate phase or a lifetime of it. Celibacy for holistic healers is very ancient and common and considered a way of saving spiritual energy for the acts of healing. The guy is the film's version of an urban monk.

I don't think he was gay. In the end at the wedding, you could see him introducing a girl he was with as his date.

That was really refreshing: when she first runs over to his apartment and the audience first meets him, I thought, 'Oh, no, the stock effeminate gay guy who's the heroine's confidante because she can completely be herself with him and they can gossip, talk about boys, etc.' Then he turns out to be totally celibate and asexual. Really amazing, he related to her in a way that had no sexual undertones - not gay guy talking to straight girl, not studly guy considering attractive girl, nothing but pure listening and answering.

I just watched this last night and found his character very refreshing!

He was straight and zen and her neighbor and good friend. They were buddies! Yes, it exists. He's with a gorgeous black girl (clearly "together" based on their touching/body language) at her dad's wedding. Jamie adored him just as her caring actupuncturist & friend.

Great film.

I too was surprised by the realistic sex scenes. Most films are so fake and ridiculous when it comes to sex. Real lighting. Real bodies. Real positions. Real ackwardness. Real heat and definitely a real orgasm from Jamie with Mick in the morning of the blue room. Refreshing!
