Will acts too much like....

Woody Allen in this mvie. He was good. Only everyonce and a while I would get the impression that he was channeling some of woody's old performances.

I watched enough Woody Allen movies to know this...It can stil bother me, can't it?

reply

It bothers me too. Let the actors just be. If he wants them to be him, why doesn't he just act in the movies?

reply

Getting to old to play those parts, I guess...

I agree. I'd rather see Allen back in his films, rather than having his actors try to play him (I actually think Ferrell made an commendable effort), which is just almost certainly probably going to fail. Though if anyone can do it, maybe Larry David can... so it'll be interesting to see 'Whatever Works'.

i really thought the film would have worked better if Allen had starred instead of Will Ferrell. i'd be really curious to know why he chose to stay behind the camera on this project, i think he would have been perfect.

reply

Will Farrell's character was obivously written as the Woody Allen-type character, but he didn't pull it off. I think Woody Allen either needs to play the character himself or write him differently.

Woody can't realistically play the romantic lead in his movies any more, unless they starting using only older women to play the female lead. And the studios will never let him get away that as a regular thing because he needs younger stars to attract casual fans.

Woody Allen was believable having much younger girlfriends in his movies for a long time. I'd say up until Small Time Crooks. It's just not believable to think these young starlets could fall for a man THAT much older than them, especially since he generally plays a schmuck. Using young actors to mirror his comic persona is unfortunately a necessity at this point. And to be honest, while I wasn't crazy with Ferrell in Melinda and Melinda, I think John Cusack and Kenneth Branagh did great in Bullets and Celebrity.

reply

I think that's the whole point. Even when Woody isn't in one of his films there's usually a character meant to personify him. And Will does it great, up there with Kenneth Branaugh in Celebrity.

reply

He did a good job in that I could really imagine Woody, but I found that distracting.

Woody Allen clone or not, I thought Will did a great job in this movie, and he is, in fact, the only reason I watched it more than once.

What Ferrell was up to here, is quite undoubtedly the worst leading comic performance in any Stiffy film, ever - and yes, he`s essentially imitating Stiffy at his very worst (of course it doesn`t help that the writing is atrocious). Jason Biggs with his blank stare and completely lacking comic timing in the previous year`s Anything Else was awful enough, but this here really does take the cake.

I put the blame squarely on Woody, HE directed Will to ACT that way
