In my opinion it was very underrated by most. Of course it's never gonna be a GTA San Andreas beater...but I actually preferred it to GTA 3 and Vice City. Don't shoot me! Just my honest opinion. It has its drawbacks...and the city is quite rough around the edges...but for some reason I just love its spirit and the game world is frickin huge! Still get a kick out of solving the random street crimes. Anyone else like it?
I like this game & I also like the GTA series. Unfortuntely, people are going to compare this game to the GTA series because you can carjack people, shoot enemies, run from the police, et al.
The big difference is while the GTA games are based on real cities, True Crime: SOLA recreates 240 square miles of the Los Angeles area. Wanna know who big this game is, it takes 30 minutes to get from one side of LA to the other.
And also, this game features you playing as a cop. The GTA games have you playing as a criminal.
I also liked this game a lot, and it really confuses me that it is so underrated by most. In many ways I would say that it is better than the gta-series, especially since it isn't that frustrating to play as gta can be. The story is also way moore interesting than in the GTA-series, even though some of true crimes characters are bit shallow. Overall the gameplay kicked ass and I was really impressed by streets of LA:s variated environments, you could go from fighting crazy chinese chefs in a restaurant kitchen to engage in a vicious boss battle on a rooftop waaay abobe the ground. Just writing about it makes me wanna play it again, and I think I'm going to download it to my computer right now...;)

Sucky hit detection, a fighting system that defines the term "button masher" (you only really need to mash two buttons over and over and over again, then combo or grapple when they're stunned), miles and miles of LA that you can't do much of anything in, no weapons that stay with you other than your two pistols, only one kind of music unless you buy the xbox version...I could go on but it'd take about a day to finish.
Yeah, best game ever. Definitely.
I kinda like it, but it just doesn't have the replay value of GTA: Vice City. Going on a rampage isn't nearly as fun, especially since it takes around 10 minutes to kill enough people to attract the cops, unless you manage to find a cop and kill him.
I liked it. I think a lot of people give this game a bad rap because GTA was the number 1 game series at that point and people were expecting a game so similar, that they were upset about how it came out. I think Activision and Luxoflux did a good job at this game.

one of my favourite games, all the cast who do the voices do it really well, you can imagine what the live action film will be like with mosta these guys playing these characters!
I never understood why it people didn't like it either. It combined the gameplay of GTA with Dead to rights and max payne. The game really made me feel like i was in some over the top action movie. i loved it. i bought the game the day it came. i had been reading about all while it was in development. My only issue was the fight wasn't all it could be.
Wow! I'm glad there are others that absolutely love this game and can't understand why so many trash it
I enjoyed this game and Nick Kang (especially) so much that I refused to buy True Crimes: New York City because it was a new guy. I probably won't get the alleged True Crimes 3 either, unless it's Kang (which might be more or less unlikely)
This might just be me though, I'm that huge of a Nick Kang mark
^^I know what you mean, this game was fvcking awesome! I loved the cast, the graphics, the storyline and the missions, such an awesome game. I LOVED Nick Kang, Russell Wong IS Nick Kang! Walken, Rodriguez, Oldman, Madsen, Pounder, Perlman and Wong all in this game, that's just amazing! Nick's so quotable too haha! "See, whup-ass ain't just my license plate!" LMAO!

The problem was, people were doing into this game expecting the next GTA, and if you go into it, thinking the depth of GTA, yes, youre gonna be disappointed. While you can collect dog bones, GTA3 (they got even more in depth with VC and SA, so lets just do 3) you can do a taxi mission, paramedic, ambulance, collect hidden packages, do side missions, choose whose missions you wanna do first, go on a rampage, collect cars, just kill people and get your star level to 6 and try to jack those awesome indestructable cars.
GTA3/vc/sa had beautiful scenes great cutscenes, and there is just so much depth.
Now with that, no, True crimes cant hold a candle to GTA....BUT....if you go into this thinking a fun little game, linear story (well, yes you can fail and take different paths and get different endings, but still, it's pass mission, go to the next point.)
Still, it's a really fun game, is it the best game ever, no, but I honestly enjoyed it.
Honestly, I enjoyed True Crime LA more than Sleeping Dogs. Sleeping Dogs has nice graphics, but it misses this True Crime awesomeness. True Crime LA actually had more fight moves to study, including lethal moves.
Yeah it can't beat GTA, but it is still cool in it's own way.
I don't even think it's the best True Crime game much less better than any of the GTA games. Now the sequel is a different story, compared to LA, Streets Of NY is better in every way.
