Does anyone know what this song means?

Guys, there was this song in Turkish that comes up twice in the movie... It makes me feel so overwhelmed even though I don't understand the language.

Could a Turkish speaker on the forum help me with the meaning? The song can be heard online at http://bambolia.castpost.com/567582.html

The movie is one of my all time favourites even though I don't speak Greek or Turkish.

reply

I am Greek but I dont speak any turkish - unfortunately. However, as I do happen to have the soubdtrack, - music written by a very talented greek lady composer - I believe you mean the "BAHART TARCIN VE BUSE " which translates in "spice, cinammon and kiss".
But that;s as far as I can go!

Many thanks,

You are right about the song (this is the song I was referring to) - I wish I could understand the song lyrics.

I have a lot of interest in foreign language movies. Could you please recommend me any other Greek movie? I have seen Eleni & My big fat greek wedding. While both the movies were in English they had a strong Greek culture and I liked that bit (have lived in Cyprus for quite some time)

reply

Eleni is a great film, based on a book, a real story. Eleni was the mother of the author.

Unfortunately there aren't many good greek recent films. However, there are SOME.

Brides is one, I think the latest that went international (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0368619/) not my favourite, but you watch it with pleasure.

I believe that you have seen "Captain Corelli's Mandolin" with Nicholas Cage and Penelope Cruz. Sweet film, set on the island of Kephalonia. If you havent I recommend it!

You should try watching some good old greek cinema, (in english) like, for example, "Never on Sunday" , "Topkapi" and "Phaedra" all with Melina Merkouri a very famous (but now dead) Greek actress. (more info http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0580479/). Great films but I am not quite sure whether you can find them....But if you do, they are worth watching.
Oh, another great one is with Sophia Loren "Boy on a dolphin" filmed on Hydra (I think). Even though it is an old filnm (1957) you should be able to find it.

I would also recommend you to see "Mediterraneo" which is an italian production but filmed on a greek island (Kastelorizo).
I believe that you will be able to find that more easily than the others, as it is more recent. (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0102426/)

Best,
Thalia

You might wanna try and find the 1999 film "peppermint", again starring Georges Corraface or "Beware of Greeks Bearing Guns" (2000)

reply

Thanks for your recommendation. I will watch these movies.

Sorry, I am no poet, so all I can do is to translate trying to stick to the meaning.

went with a pinch of spice
a shadow in the bazaar
and it laid salt on my way
i will find you in secrets

spice, cinnemon and kiss
instruction is kept in the attic
moonlight and bosphorus are alone
that lighthouse is our childhood love

that night you left me
i searched for you in the secrets
i was fooled by a pinch of spice
i tasted the bitterness with you

spice, cinnemon and kiss
instruction is kept in the attic
moonlight and bosphorus are alone
that lighthouse is our childhood love

I recommend Peppermint as well. It's pretty much the best Greek movie I've seen, and certainly one of the best overall. Do watch it, you won't be disappointed. I have yet to see someone who didn't think it was at least "good", not to mention those who've fallen in love with it.

Loufa Kai Parallaghi is also nice, but you might have a hard time understanding the humour at times if you're not familiar with the culture and recent history of the area. If you like a mild kick in the groin and don't mind gay themed movies, Apo Tin Akri Tis Polis is something to get your hands on. There is no graphic gay sex or anything, I'm hetero myself.

Last but not least, O Vasilias may be interesting for anyone from any culture, just like Peppermint. But Peppermint is WAY better.

Since you're a fellow Euro flick fan, I'd like to give you recommendations from other nations as well. Especially from Turkey, since I'm from there. Just let me know if interested!

Yes, please feel free to recommend me movies from any country and I would especially love to hear from you about Turkish movies.
